Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas
Sunday January 11, 2015
St. James Hall
(3214 West 10th Avenue)

What a great way to start the Rogue's 28th Anniversary! Revered Scots fiddler Alasdair Fraser has been visiting Vancouver regularly since the mid 1980s, and has performed many times at The Rogue dating back to 1987 when he played The Savoy with pianist Paul Machlis. Alasdair was greatly inspired by the traditional music of Cape Breton, where the Scots immigrants had preserved the music of eighteenth century Scotland by passing it down from generation to generation, more or less undiluted by foreign influence, and not subject to quite such rigorous banishment as in the homeland. He released two albums with Paul Machlis, and one with Cape Breton pianist Barbara MacDonald Magone before teaming up briefly with guitarist Tony McManus(Return to Kintail). But this amazingly creative fiddler was determined to turn back time once again by reuniting the fiddle and the cello - the fashionable dance ensemble in the great houses of Scotland in the 18th and 19th centuries. In California-born Natalie Haas he found the perfect musical companion, and the duo recorded Fire & Grace in 2004 and have since recorded three more superb albums, the latest being Abundance (2014). Last year we kicked off the season with Alasdair and Natalie in fine form, and they were joined by members of the Vancouver Royal Scottish Country Dance Society and the remarkable dancing girls of A Shot of Scotch (we do hope they will be able to join the fun again this weekend!)

So, if you love the sound of the fiddle and the cello and Celtic music is your thing, then St. James Hall is the place to be this Sunday night!

Tickets are available online and at Highlife Records, Prussin Music, Red Cat Records and Rufus' Guitar Shop

Radio Waves
I'll be back in the saddle on The Edge On Folk this Saturday from 8am to noon on CiTR fm 101.9 and Thanks to Heather McCain for filling in while I've been visiting family and friends in New Zealand and Australia for the past couple of weeks.

On this week's show I'll have a quick look back at some highlights of the past year and a look ahead to some concert highlights coming up in 2015. (we have just added Buffy Ste-Marie at Capilano University on April 30th, by the way!)

It will be great to be back; refreshed after a little break and a rare chance to see my brother and his family in NZ and Melbourne, and to catch up with DJ friends at PBS fm in Melbourne (Susi Lanagan, Roger Holdsworth and Glen Morrow)

Please join me on Saturday morning and I hope to see you at The Rogue on Sunday as well.

Happy New Year!
