Joy of the New Year 元宵節

Introducing Chinese Music to the audience, this concert focuses on a variety of musical sources from the classical repertoire to folk based pieces that are popular in the Chinese communities. It includes instrumental solos, ensembles, a song with Tang poetry, Tang court music and a few compositions that reflect their encounters with different cultures.

With the Rogue Folk Club, Silk Road Music celebrates the first Full Moon of 2022 with friends and audiences. At the end of the Lunar New Year Celebration, we are wishing the Spring arrives soon! Peace, health and prosperity for the next step of the adventure in the Year of the Tiger.

Silk Road Music 絲綢之路音樂團 is a Vancouver-based ensemble that bridges classical Chinese music to the practices of the 21st century. Since 1991, it has performed hundreds of concerts in many parts of the World.  From Festivals, Universities and with Symphony orchestras, its artistic direction reflects the fundamental desire of each musician to strive for discovery. Qiu Xia He, the leader of the group has performed for the Rogue Folk Club with several groups over the years. This time she’s back with a special line up of musicians, playing with some rare Chinese Instruments that are not commonly seen or heard.

For over twenty years, Silk Road Music has been smashing stereotypes about Chinese music and taking Chinese instruments in new artistic directions. Its pioneering musical fusions have merged Chinese folk and classical music with Brazilian, jazz, Celtic, Spanish, Arabic, Aboriginal and blues music. Founded by Qiu Xia He (pr. Chu-sha Her), a one-time music teacher and touring musician in her native Shaanxi, China, the ensemble has earned a Juno nomination, two West Coast Music Awards and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations. Most recently, the group has begun exploring flamenco music and performing on-stage with flamenco dancers.

Recent research suggests that the Chinese explorers of the 15th century voyaged not only to India and Africa, but around the world to the Americas. Whether true or not, this controversial theory has inspired a worldwide journey of musical exploration by the Silk Road Duo. In an adventurous encounter of musical traditions, Silk Road Music shows that China does indeed speak your language.
