Accordion Noir
World / Alt / Accordion
Wednesday 10-11pm
Wednesday nights from 10 - 11 pm, Bruce Triggs and Rowan Lipkovits host what is, as best as they can tell, the world's only radio show with the specialty theme of music containing squeezebox and free-reed instruments of some kind or another. On the air since December 2006, their broadcasts are also podcasted to an international audience of hundreds at accordionnoir.org
Aiming to represent the global diversity of regional musical genres and styles the instrument is used in, the show celebrates and champions the renaissance of the dark, edgy accordion over the Lawrence Welk-ian “champagne music” that stultified the instrument’s public image in North America for decades.
We aim to continue (with the huge assistance of local accordion star Geoff Berner) an annual Fall Accordion Noir festival of accordionic musical performances (and here it is at www.facebook.com/AccordionNoirFestival ) and screenings celebrating squeezeboxes in film, and also host a monthly gathering of local squeezebox users at Spartacus Books the first Thursday of every month -- a gathering with its own Facebook group over at www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2315256047
