Daniel Lapp was born and raised in the Cariboo into a musical family with prairie roots. He learned fiddle music from his farming grandfather and five uncles and grew up playing gigs with his mother on piano. He was also mentored by a legion of Prince George prairie fiddling transplants who had moved to the booming logging town during the 1950’s and who formed the BC Old-Time Fiddle Association in 1969. To this day, there are branches throughout the province holding weekly fiddle jams, monthly dances and annual contests and jamborees. It was through these mentors that Daniel first started collecting original BC tunes after a trip to the UK with Spirit of the West inspired him to look closer to home for repertoire.
Now, 36 years into collecting and archiving, Daniel has 3000 tunes by 300 composers with tunes dating back to the mid 1800’s. For this work and his work as a teacher, Daniel has received numerous awards including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, a lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Association, the Innovator Award from the Canadian Folk Music Association and most recently, an invitation to receive an Honorary Doctor of Music from the University of Victoria. Daniel is the current Artistic Director of the School of Contemporary Music at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
Daniel’s newest project is Woodbox Records, a label dedicated to the preservation and promotion of BC fiddle music. Last spring, Daniel released his first fiddle album in over 20 years, Hardwood Sessions Vol. 1 on Woodbox Records, packed with original tunes. The album features award-winning producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, and former student of Lapp’s, Quinn Bachand.
Ever the bold musical voyageur, Quinn has invested in his love of swing jazz. He’s received five Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, the Saga Djangofest Award, two Western Canada Music Award nominations, an “Emerging Artist” spot with the RBC Canada’s Walk of Fame, six nominations at the Vancouver Island Music Awards, not to mention a full ride, 4 year Slaight Family scholarship to Boston’s Berklee College of Music and top prize at the Independent Music Awards for Jazz Song with Vocals. After his 4-year stint of extensive touring and studies, Quinn graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2018 and currently resides in Montreal.
