Saturday September 25, 2010

This week's show included a phone interview with Caleb Klauder from Portland, OR. He called in from Seattle before heading north for a Cajun Honky Tonk that evening at St. James Hall. We talked about his new CD, Western Country, his country band, his role in the Foghorn String Band and the Cajun musicians who were traveling with him (Joel Savoy and Jesse Lege from Lafayette.) The previous night they had played at Conor Byrne's Hibernian Bar in Ballard, a funky part of Seattle that runs alongside the industrial canal. The bar is a long, narrow room at right angles to the cobbled street. Quite a contrast to the lofty wooden vaulted ceiling and newly refinished dance floor at St. James. I think I started the interview by saying "Caleb Klauder is to Hank Williams what k.d. lang was to Patsy Cline." That should give you an idea of the country band's music. It doesn't begin to tell of his versatility and the raw power of the Foghorns - and the Cajun ensemble that opened the show later that day. Check out his new CD on www.calebklauder.com - and don't miss any opportunity to see any of his bands! Well over 200 happy dancers will testify to that after the Cajun Honky Tonk hoedown on Saturday night! (Caleb will next be in town with the Foghorn Trio on Saturday January 8th at St. James Hall, by the way!)
