Rogue Folk Club Artistic Director Steve Edge, in the studios of CiTR. Note the Manchester United cap!

Saturday July 16, 2011

Broadcast live from Jericho Beach at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. From a flimsy tent, in pouring rain! Co-hosted by Steve Edge & Linda Bull, with incredible support from Adam and Andy and co. from CiTR fm. Nathan Rogers stopped by for a chat at some point - which makes the sequence of songs here not quite accurate! We had invited many more musicians to join us, but the weather was so appalling I'm amazed we even found one!
The festival was great, for all that. Rosanne Cash magically kept the rain storms confined to all other parts of the city on Saturday night and the festival escaped with a few sprinkles while the rest of the city was building arks! The big hits were Pokey Lafarge and the South City Three, selling all their CDs. Gillian Welch & David Rawlings gave a sublime set on Friday and then gave us a rare interview, which will be aired later. Was supposed to be 10 minutes, but ran for well over 30, so some editing needs to be done. Diana Jones was another hit, Leon Rosselson showed he still has a great gift for writing, Hans Theessink made an impressive debut here, Solas, too, played for the first time. Leonard Podolak staged a remarkable mega concert with several Celtic / Old Time / Alt Country bands. Tinariwen were refused entry, which was very sad, and definitely not the festival's fault. All the paperwork was in place, just the whim of the Canadian government to keep them out this time. Ricardo Lemvo filled in on main stage with a superb set - he should have been on main stage anyway, I thought, but it was sad that a few festival performers had such a tough time at the border. Morgan O'Kane was also turned away, but the other half of his band played on Sunday night and the last good song I heard was their rendition of my Mum's favourite song from WW II, J'Attendrai.
