We are very excited about this show! Two bands we saw last year who made a great impression! The Andrew Collins Trio played a showcase at Hugh's Room in Toronto during last December's Canadian Folk Music Awards. I was certainly expecting brilliant instrumentals, but their vocals were pretty good too. They then won a CFMA for Instrumental Album of the Year - at the same ceremony where I was given the Slaight Foundation Unsung Hero Award. It was a special night!!

At the end of August we attended Denmark's remarkable Tonder Festival where we saw a great many excellent bands. It rained on the last day so we spent much of the time in the two Spiegltents on the site. That's where we saw the Nordic Fiddlers Bloc (and where I took that photo of the band.) Now I had seen Kevin Hendersonmany years before, when he and his sister Ingrid played the Vancouver Folk Music Festival as winners of the BBC Young Tradition Award. I later saw them at Celtic Traditions, on 10th Avenue. I was dragged up on stage by PEI's Ten Strings & A Goat Skin to join in the Tonder Festival finale - and found myself right next to the Nordic Fiddlers as we all joined in for a stirring rendition of Will The Circle Be Unbroken. 

So it's a night for rekindling memories and making new ones with 6 superbly talented and inventive musicians. I hope you can make it down to The Rogue! There will be tickets available at the door up to show time.
 
Carlos Nunez, Friday April 7th, 8pm at The Vogue Theatre Galicia's Carlos Nunez is known as The Jimi Hendrix of the bagpipes and he returns with his band, plus guests including Mairi Rankin, a pipe band, and three young singers and musicians from Galicia and Euskadi (Basque country)

It's not a Rogue show, but I wouldn't miss it!!
 
This will be a great chance to hook up with the incredible duo Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman. Perhaps you were there when they stole the show at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival all those years ago (2001, was it?) when they had the whole audience waving our Birkenstocks in the air to defy the no-dancing embargo in quintessentially west coast style! They played the WISE Hall shortly thereafter, and when their van was towed from Commercial Drive the audience had a whip-round and raised more than enough to secure the release of the impounded vehicle. They've been back many times since, and I defy you to find a more soulful singer and a funkier groove than this wonderful duo conjure up! They have a superb new CD, I Shook The Tree, and will be joined by Vancouver singer / multi instrumentalist Shari Ulrich for what promises to be another memorable night at The Rogue. Jack Broadbent, Sunday April 9th, 8pm at St. James Hall
This show is part of Capilano University's Global Roots series, and we are thrilled to bring it to St. James. Jack is a soulful blues singer and slide player from England with a unique take on the blues. Tickets can be purchased here

On this week's Saturday Edge On Folk I'll have plenty of new releases again, including The Waifs, I Draw Slow, Jack Broadbent, Steph Cameron, Fraser & Haas, Sharon Shannon, Amelia Curran, Guy Davis, Kayla Luky, Anda Union, Quiles & Cloud, Bumper Jacksons, Jayme Stone, Viper Central, and Eric Bibb. There will also be a special guest, Jay Knutson, a founding member of Spirit of the West, at 11am. This week's show runs from 8am to 11:30am, as CiTR has a special outside broadcast. Paul Norton hosts three shows on CFRO Coop Radio 100.5fm on Sunday from 1pm to 5:30pm to celebrate 40 years as a DJ on Coop Radio! One O'Clock Jump, In The Pines, and What The Folk will each feature live guests, including Roy Forbes on WTF. Congratulations, Paul!
