Rogue Folk Club Artistic Director Steve Edge, in the studios of CiTR. Note the Manchester United cap!

Saturday July 28, 2007

This week was a special one! For the first time I broadcast live from the Mission Folk Music Festival in beautiful Fraser River Heritage Park, 50 miles east of Vancouver. I created a playlist in iTunes and set up my trusty new Macbook Pro at the festival gate where I could pick up their wireless internet feed. Then, using Nicecast and Audio Hijack from Rogue Amoeba Software I hooked up a USB mic and some speakers and voila! One broadcast booth. Then CiTR Newsman Peter Ottis at the studio attempted to hook up to my transmission. We had quite a struggle training the rugged old PC in the studio, but after around 40 minutes of interrupted signal it finally got used to the idea and the last 3 hours and 20-odd minutes went by smoothly. Another entry in the annals of broadcast history, folks! It was intense, exhilarating, and ultimately very satisfying.

Later that day I was asked by the Mexican reggae band Rastrillos where I had found their music. They had heard the show, but didn't know that recordings of their recent concert at The Commodore were available! I downloaded it from their Myspace site. They were amazed that I had found it. I was totally amazed that they were listening!

I also sent out requests to listeners to email me if they were able to tune in and how it all sounded. I ran a test broadcast the previous day as well. Had loads of positive feedback.

Herein is the playlist. Some of the first few songs were only heard in the park, and the Meg Tennant song went out over the airwaves instead of my playlist early on (but since the song was written about the Mission Folk Music Festival, it was a perfect choice. Even if Peter didn't know that at the time.)
