Rogue Folk Club Artistic Director Steve Edge, in the studios of CiTR. Note the Manchester United cap!

Saturday May 10, 2008

New releases this week include the gorgeous Israeli singer Mor Karbasi, Canadian duo Stewed Roots from St. Catherine's Ontario (thank you Kevin Swayze for the referral!), the Dixie Bee-Liners (saw them in Memphis. Very nice bluegrass and then some), and two CDs in my mailbox: I See Hawks In L.A. and the wonderful new recording by Eliza Gilkyson.

There was a also a mini feature on Celtic music duo Norah Rendell & Brian Miller - from vancouver and Minneapolis, via Limerick!

Finished up with Thin Lizzy. Many years ago I would stop at The Salisbury, a pub in central Manchester, en route to the footie. Someone would always play Whiskey In The Jar on the jukebox before we boarded the train from Oxford Road to Old Trafford. Manchester United always seemed to win after that song. So I played it in anticipation of the final match of the season. It worked! United are Champions again! (Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy was a United fan, by the way. An interesting chap of mixed Irish and Brazilian parentage, who was raised in Dublin and Manchester. His music was starting to explore his Afro-Brazilian and Anglo-Irish roots when he was taken from us almost 30 years ago. Thin Lizzy were primarily a metal band, but they had plenty of blues and Irish folklore in their songs as well. And plenty of Mancunian cheek and bravado, too. 50 years on from the Munich Air Crash, in which 8 United players lost their lives and many more were too badly hurt to play again, I like to think that Phil is in some way watching The Busby Babes, and they - along with Georgie Best - are watching over the team on earth, as we face up to a Russian mobster and his Blue Meanies - colloquially known as Chavski - in the European Cup Final in Moscow on May 21. Come On You Reds!!)
