Rogue 33 RPM | May 12 | This Day in Rogue History

On this day in 1989 we brought another of those legendary Irish trad bands to The Wise Hall - Skylark (Len Graham - one of Ireland's very best trad singers, from Co. Antrim; Garry O'Brian on guitar etc., and Gerry O'Connor on fiddle.) They were the cover stars of our May 1989 Review.

Jumping ahead to 2000, it was time for the leather pants and scorching hot fiddle of PEI's Richard Wood - also a fierce step dancer - to grace our Wise Hall stage! What a performer! Nice to see him back in action in 2020. Hadn't heard from him in many a year. Here's the write-up on the show.

In 2006 we presented Vancouver's gypsy jazz hombres Van Django at St. James Hall for the
very first time as part of our 19th anniversary celebration. They were joined by lead guitarist
Budge Schachte's partner, Sarah Marshall, whose sweet voice and clever lyrics adorn her
2003 debut CD, All The Dreamers. They made a very tasty musical blend that Friday evening
- which was also the very first Rogue show with a direct hyperlink on our website!

On Saturday May 12th 2007 Pied Pumkin were our guests at the Rogue's 20th Anniversary
show at St. James Hall. The concert preview on our website contains my little essay
attempting to describe the Canadian West Coast Sound - which I reckon was defined and
pioneered by this wonderful acoustic stringband way back in the early 1970s.

The Rogue's Silver Jubilee on this date 5 years later featured Jim Byrnes  Steve Dawson
C.R. Avery  and The Sojourners celebrating 100 years of Robert Johnson, Woody Guthrie
and Bill Monroe, 50 years of The Beatles, and Bob Dylan, and of course, 25 years of Roguery!
What an incredible evening we had at The St. James "Infirmary"!!

On May 12th 2013 Idaho songwriter Eilen Jewell played St. James with her fine band, featuring
the outstanding rock guitarist Jerry Miller (not to be confused with the Jerry Miller who
played first lead guitar with 60s psychedelic band Moby Grape). Opening for them were The
Barn Birds (Jonathan Byrd and Chris Kokesh). This was another memorable show!

On May 12th 2016 we hosted an Evening Of Songwriters, at St. James, curated by -
and featuring - The Rogue's lovely Admin Assistant at that time - Lydia Hol, along with
Ian Sherwood (NS), Maria Dunn (AB), and The Sojourner Khari McLelland.

Most recently, on May 12th 2017  we hosted a CD launch for Cascadia's finest bluegrass &
acoustic folk quintet John Reischman & The Jaybirds at St. James Hall.
