Hi everyone

Our 6th annual festival of gypsy jazz, April In Paris, is just around the corner. It runs from April 19th to 22nd at St. James Hall. More about that later. Meanwhile we continue to bring you some of Canada's finest folk music talent, this week, wonderful Ottawa songwriter Lynn Miles.

1. Lynn Miles w/ Keith Glass, Friday April 13th, 8pm, St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

She's been lauded in the New York Times and the Washington Post, she's won Juno Awards, and her latest CD, Fall For Beauty, was voted Album of 2011 by Penguin Eggs magazine, won a Canadian Folk Music Award, and won praise in countless magazines and newspaper reviews. Having reviewed albums for some three decades, in any one year only a handful of albums truly deserve the maximum accolade of five stars. If everything were fair in this flawed human existence, FALL FOR BEAUTY would (at least) be a six. - Maverick Magazine, UK.

Lynn Miles first appeared at The Rogue over 20 years ago. Since then she's released eight albums and moved from Ottawa to Nashville to Los Angeles and back to Ottawa. She continues to write plaintive songs of love and loss like nobody else can do. Her majestic lament for a dead coal miner, Black Flowers, was recently recorded by Red Molly - who sang it here just a few weeks ago in fact. Fall For Beauty contains many such captivating songs, and we are delighted to hear that Lynn is touring with Prairie Oyster guitarist, Keith Glass (one of my favourite guitar players, and a devotee of Richard Thompson - so he must be good!)

One of Lynn's earlier "hits" was Hockey Night In Canada, which is especially appropriate on this evening, as the NHL play-offs are underway, and the Canucks are playing this night. (If you don't like hockey, come to the show. If you do like hockey we promise not to give out the score from the stage, but we can't guarantee that there won't be a TV in the bar. We'll keep the sound turned off, though. Who knows? It might be The Canucks' final home game of the season ....)

2. The Edge On Folk, Saturday 8am to noon, CiTR fm 101.9 and www.citr.ca

On this week's show I'll complete the Titanic references with one or maybe two selections, there'll be some gypsy jazz - maybe some brand new tunes from Van Django's 2nd CD, a tribute to Celtic / Bluegrass guitarist / mandolinist John McGann who passed away this week, some new music from Headwater, Scratch Gravel Road, Inti-Illimani, Linda McRae, The Outside Track, and lots more surprises. I'd love it if you'd join me!
