Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

Hi everyone

We have had a great run of shows in the past few months and as our way of saying Thank You to our members and loyal supporters we are offering this Friday's concert on a sliding scale of $5 and up for tickets. Pay what you like: we ask for at least $5. If you can afford more, then please pay anything up to the members' price of $16. (We still have to pay the musicians, you know!)

We are also offering CDs by a huge variety of artists for a donation of $1 or $2 (whichever you like.) I receive a lot of CDs in the mail and at conferences and don't always get a chance to listen to them all properly. The only thing we ask is that if you think that the music is really brilliant, please let us know!! You could help us discover a new prospect for a future Rogue show.

Last week we had some problems getting this update out to all our email subscribers, and many of you with a Telus account may not have received it at all. We apologize for any duplication (or non-appearance) of last week's update. Let's hope this one goes through ....

1. Brandy Zdan & Scott Nolan, Friday May 16th, 8pm, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue) - tickets at the door on a sliding scale $5 to $16!!
Winnipeggers Brandy Zdan (formerly of duo Twilight Hotel) & Scott Nolan join forces for this night of roots music. Both seasoned multi-instrumentalists, the two will share the bill as well as collaborate on each others songs.

"A one woman tour de force" - Lone Star Magazine. Emerging for the first time as a solo artist in 2013, Zdan is anything but a rookie. In 2003 Zdan co-founded Twilight Hotel with Dave Quanbury and together they recorded 2 JUNO-nominated albums - 2008's Highway Prayer and 2010's When the Wolves Go Blind - forging a sound that critics likened to "old leather, worn and soft" and earned them the handle "rulers of their own genre". In 2011, Zdan was recruited as a triple-threat side woman by Austin-based female super-group The Trishas for her six string, lap steel, and accordion skills which recently earned her a Musician of the Year nomination at the Lone Star Music Awards in Texas. In 2013, Zdan released her first solo effort, Lone Hunter.  She now makes her home in Nashville, TN. You may have seen Brandy with Twilight Hotel in a Shore 104-sponsored double bill with T. Nile a few years back. She was undoubtedly the star of that show, and we are delighted to welcome her back! www.brandyzdan.com

Just back from a Hayes Carll (Austin, TX) tour of TX & TN and gearing up to record his 6th studio record, 2014 is poised to be quite the year for Scott Nolan. Weaving seamlessly between the twang of parlour electric guitar and heavy-hearted dirges, Nolan's body of work offers an interchange of heady balladry as well as more muscular outflow. He has recorded with Hayes Carll, The Holmes Brothers, and Gurf Morlix, and is a favourite among Fredheads (Fred Eaglesmith fans) south of the border. Now it's our turn! He co-wrote the title track with Mary Gauthier for her brand new CD, Love & Trouble, and recently participated in Folsom Prison's Arts in Corrections program, which is also the subject of a feature length documentary.

2. Notice Of Annual General Meeting, Friday May 23rd, St. James Community Square (3214 West 10th Avenue) 6pm
The Rogue is a registered non-profit Society and is required to hold an Annual General Meeting and to elect several Board members. We have 10 Board members, serving two-year terms. These terms are "staggered" so that half the Board is elected each year. At the present time we are presenting a slate of 5 candidates who are standing for re-election: Phil Gray, Bill Hooker, Doug O'Neill, David Toole and Jim Pozer. If there are any members who wish to stand for election instead, please notify Board Chair Dan Bowditch on board@roguefolk.bc.ca as soon as possible. The meeting will take place in the Small Community Room at the rear of the building on the lower level. Entrance will be via the rear door off the parking lot in the lane on the south side of the Hall. All members are invited to attend, and there will be a short "window" of opportunity to renew your membership before the AGM, if necessary. Please be prompt. We must finish the meeting in time to open the doors upstairs at 7pm prior to the Don Alder concert, which starts at 8pm.

3. Radio Rogue
Last week I did some extensive research on the musicians coming to the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in July (18-20. You can buy Early Bird Tickets at a significant discount on our website up to June 8th.) I added a lot of songs by these performers - plus a bunch of new releases - to Radio Rogue, which broadcasts 24/7 from our website. Check it out. There is some amazing new music coming to Jericho Beach Park, and this is one of the best ways to preview it.

4. Steve's Photo Gallery
I have added some new photos to the Photo Gallery - mostly from concerts at the tail end of 2013. I will be adding more photos from 2014 as soon as possible. Why not take a look? It can be found on our website.

5. The Edge On Folk, Saturday 8am to noon, CiTR fm 101.9 and streamed live on www.citr.ca
On this week's show I'll have a some live music in the studio from Vancouver's world champion finger-style guitarist Don Alder (at 11am) to preview his concert at The Rogue on Friday May 23rd. He will also talk about his recent concert in Hawaii with Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield and Star Trek's William Shatner. There will also be new releases from the likes of Natalie Merchant, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Aziza Brahim, and the latest fRoots magazine sampler CD. Plus festival previews, old favourites, and upcoming Rogues. Please join me for 4 hours of the very best in Folk & Roots Music from next door, across the country, and across the ponds. You can listen live on CiTR 101.9 fm in Vancouver, Telus TV Channel 7023 in BC and Alberta, and on your computer at www.citr.ca
