A Celebration of Troubadours!
This week we have three concerts and a Contra Dance, including for the very first time, two events on the same night (at two different venues, of course!)
On Friday October 3rd we celebrate the launch of Juniper's Kitchen by Vancouver songwriter Reid Jamieson and his band at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue).
Then on Saturday October 4th we present the return of American songwriter / novelist / painter Dan Bern with Vancouver's T. Nile opening, at the Waterfront Theatre (1412 Cartwright Street, on Granville Island.) At the same time there will be a Contra Dance at St. James Hall with The Sybaritic Stringband.
On Thursday October 9th Manitoba songwriter Del Barber brings his band The Profiteers and special guest Blake Berglund to St. James.

Reid Jamieson's music has been described by The Globe & Mail as "Gorgeous, sun-struck acoustic soul". We can't argue with that! While the new CD comprises mostly love songs co-written with his partner Carolyn Victoria Mill, Reid is an exceptionally versatile songwriter and performer. Since his previous CD, Staring Contest, he has released a series of singles and tribute albums, including wonderful covers of songs by Elvis Presley, Cream, and Bob Dylan. Three of his recent singles are even more impressive: Gift of Life is an encouragement to sign up as an organ donor; Game of Thrones urges us to get out and vote whenever we have the opportunity (there are civic elections next month, and there's still time to poke our local council candidates and incumbents to Save The Hollywood!!); It's Not Enough (For Healing) was written for Reconciliation Week last year.
Reid Jamieson shines his light with an incredible voice, therapeutic lyrics, and a magical way with melodies. He's a regular on CBC’s Vinyl Cafe, and a winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (folk). The Juniper's Kitchen band features Reid Jamieson - vocals, guitar; Carolyn Mill - vocals; Keith Rose - bass; Jon Arason - drums; and Carly Frey - fiddle.

Dan Bern
Dan Bern first made a splash in the late nineties with biographical tracks such as “Marilyn” (in which he speculated about what Marilyn Monroe’s life would have been like had she married Henry Miller instead of Arthur Miller) and “Tiger Woods” (in which he hilariously critiqued the American obsession with sports heroism and celebrity). Last year, the prolific folk performer released three albums: “Drifter,” a loosely thematic travel record that covers everything from politics to personal therapy; “Doubleheader,” a fully thematic eighteen-song suite about Bern’s lifelong love affair with baseball; and “Wilderness Song,” a manifesto about going off the grid that sounds autobiographical but isn’t, since it’s the soundtrack for a new documentary about Everett Ruess, an artist and naturalist who disappeared in Utah in the nineteen-thirties. Bern’s songs are prolix, spiky, and sometimes sentimental, and he’s a natural in concert. T. Nile
Vancouver's T. Nile launched her electronica CD Tingle & Spark the other week at the Biltmore. We thought it would be nice to hear those songs - and some of her other classics - played solo on guitar and banjo. Del Barber
We wrap up our mini-series of troubadour concerts with Winnipeg's Del Barber onThursday October 9th at St. James Hall.
The Canadian Folk Music Awards just released their 2014 nominees and Del Barber has made the list three times! Congrats to Del for being nominated for Solo Artist of the Year, Contemporary Singer of the Year and English Songwriter of the Year! He will also be a featured performer for Music City Roots including James McMurtry and John Oates on October 29th. Live from Liberty Hall at the Factory in Franklin, Tennessee, Del will be part of the esteemed weekly two-hour radio show that revives the historic legacy of live musical production and encourages creative collaboration between artists.
From the fertile Red River Valley to the pastures of the west, straight into the factory floors and slaughter houses of the city, Barber’s fourth album, Prairieography, is born out of a love for his home, its people and their stories. Barber sings from the heart about his roots, telling tales from the road, and offering incredibly personal and sincere observations of the world around him. There is an unexpected blend of old-time country and Cajun boogie on “Living With A Long Way to Go”, however Barber maintains his characteristic storytelling style with “Farewell, God Bless You, Goodbye,” a story about a young man trying to escape the hum of the city. “Walking In A Straight Line,” written in the present tense, chronicles a trip he took to the Yukon from Winnipeg via the Rockies. On “All That it Takes,” Barber enthuses, “Sometimes three chords and a light heart are enough to make a good song. We really wanted to incorporate a few songs, like this one, on the album that would lean on heavy grooves and simple soul-driven rhythm sections.” Barber has emerged as one of the next wave in this country’s proud tradition of songwriting talent. The follow-up to his award-winning albums Love Songs for the Last Twenty and Headwaters, Prairieography is the earnest travelogue of a wanderingtroubadour, and the realization that creativity is rarely a bolt of lightning. Good songs are the result of hard work, calloused fingers and learned lessons from a life well lived.

Radio Rogue broadcasts 24/7. A stream of amazing Folk & Roots Music, featuring many of the performers coming to The Rogue this season, some of our favourite past performers, some new releases and some old favourites. So there will be songs from these two great songwriters and from all the troubadours and magical musicians and singers coming to the Rogue in the next few weeks, and lots more besides!
