Shari Ulrich  is the human dynamo behind the Bluebird North Songwriter Series at The Roundhouse. She has released many solo CDs - including two in the last 4 years, which were launched at The Rogue (with a full house of appreciative fans!) She made her name with Pied Pumkin, the beloved acoustic trio that pioneered independent recording and had folks all across BC dancing and turning on to acoustic jam bands in the 70s - years before the "genre" was invented! Since those heady days Shari's warm vocals and dazzling instrumental skills on fiddle, mandolin, guitar, flute, dulcimer and piano have made her a stalwart member of the local music scene. After the Pumkin she toured with Valdy's Hometown Band for a few years before releasing several solo albums in the 80s, when she was often seen at Expo 86 in the Folklife Pavilion (my favourite hangout that year!) Ms. Shari will treat us to some of her finest songs in a solo set, but one of the problems with being a multi instrumentalist and a solo performer is finding a way to be your own backing band. Rather than using technology, Shari is bringing along a couple of amazing musicians: Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman - who will join her on stage and also perform their own set.

If you haven't experienced the wonder of Karen's voice and the brilliance of Pete's guitar accompaniment yet you should come on down to The Rogue and hear for yourself why this soulful singer earned this praise from renowned American songwriter Greg Brown: "if she was a Native American her name would be 'sings like two birds.'" Karen's voice soars and growls and her lyrics are deep and powerful. Punctuated by conga and shaker and the incredibly funky guitar of Pete Heitzman, she takes us on a journey through the landscapes of human relations and North American history, offering soul-searching songs of love, loss and catharsis. She really is an amazing soul singer!!

A few years ago at the folk festival her music was moving the main stage audience to dance, but of course, one is not allowed to dance in front of the stage, so a spontaneous display of 10,000 pairs of waving sandals swayed to the rhythm! Who was it who said, "If I can't dance to it, I don't want any part of your revolution!" Whoever it was, she - and you - will have no trouble dancing to Karen's revolution at The Rogue!

Fred Eaglesmith returns for TWO nights at the Rogue next weekend. This remarkable Canadian songwriter tours incessantly across North America with his wonderful band of angels in their tour bus that runs on used vegetable oil. His shows are loads of fun and his songs are often poignant tales of unrequited love and the desolation of towns whose industry and work have been relocated to cheaper markets. In between songs, though, his sharp wit and incredible stories - often embellished with improvised witticisms - make for a grand evening's entertainment!

Folk Alliance and Radio Waves
I'm in Kansas City at the moment for the Folk Alliance Conference. Just back from a wonderful presentation by Chris Hadfield, the Canadian astronaut and musician. Wow! What an incredible description he gave of travelling into space, floating around in space, and crashing back to earth! And how important music is out there - and especially how important music is here on earth! Phew!!

I've just uploaded a video to my Facebook page of last night's showcase with Abigail Washburn and Bela Fleck - with the Milk Carton Kids! 

I'll bring back some amazing new music for next week's Edge On Folk - the Fundrive edition - on Saturday February 28th from 8am to noon.
