There might even be a few tickets on sale at the door - but ONLY for Saturday's show.

Celebrated Ontario songwriter who made his Rogue debut last year when he had just launched the double CD, Love is Louder (Than All This Noise)- an album of songs he adapted from the Book Of Truths which he makes available to his audiences to contribute personal stories and anecdotes. It's a remarkable album, and Craig is indeed a remarkable communicator in song - and story.

To mark St. Patrick's week we're very excited to copresent Altan with CeltfestVancouver Island! Be ready for guest artists and CeltFest dancers added to the mix. 

Altan played 7 times at the Rogue between 1989 and 1999, and we are delighted to welcome them back - at last! - to North Vancouver's Centennial Theatre with a brand new studio album - The Widening Gyre, recorded in Nashville with guest appearances by the likes of Tim O'Brien, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bruce Molsky and Alison Krauss - and a special program commemorating the life and music of one of its founding members, Frankie Kennedy, who passed away in 1994. This celebrated Irish band features Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (lead vocals, fiddle), Ciarán Tourish (fiddle, tin whistle, backing vocals), Martin Tourish (button accordion, melodeon), Dáithí Sproule (guitar/vocals) and Ciarán Curran (bouzouki, bouzouki guitar). More details here


The Sweet Lowdown

Victoria trio The Sweet Lowdown are one of my favourite BC bands. Sublime harmonies, marvellous instrumental skills, and inspired songwriting are hallmarks of this combo. They were a big hit at the Mission Folk Festival last Summer and are terrifically popular in the U.K. and Europe - darlings of the BBC and fRoots magazine in particular.  More details here

At last night's amazing concert by Lunasa at the Blueshore Financial Stage at Capilano University I asked Kevin Crawford for help pronouncing the name of this superb young trad. band from Limerick. It sounds like g'witcha- Irish Gaelic for "come here". Goitse is a stunning band, with a powerful rhythm section driven by bodhran wizard Colm Phelan and guitarist Conal O'Kane.  Singer Aine McGeeney sings in both Gaelic and English and is also a brilliant fiddle player. The band is rounded out by James Harvey on mandolin and banjo and Tadhg O'Meachair on accordion (just don't ask me how to pronounce his name!) Radio Waves
 
These are exciting times both for me and for CiTR fm 101.9 !
 
In April we move into our new studio in the new Student Union Building at UBC. Thanks in large part to the money we raised in our last Fundrive in November 2013 we have some incredible new state-of-the-art studio equipment. In our new location we will be at street level, with windows and an expandable lounge which will be able to accommodate live performances and will feature a small, intimate audience seating area! 
 
On June 1st I will be celebrating 30 Years of The Edge On Folk! On the Saturday May 30th edition of my show there will be live music in that new performance space; possibly with Bill Bourne and / or Ten Strings & A Goatskin from PEI. Possibly others! 
 
30 years! I can hardly believe it!
 
I am so grateful to CiTR for giving me a chance to produce my own radio show all those years ago, and for keeping me on the air for such a long, and hugely enjoyable, time! Of course, there wouldn't be a lot of point broadcasting a show if there were no listeners, and I know you're out there, tuning in when you can. Sometimes "live" on the fm dial, sometimes streaming live on www.citr.ca - wherever your travels take you. You can even tune in to podcasts of the show - dating back over 10 years. 
 
When I started the show in 1985 we had three turntables and recorded the shows on reel to reel tape. I had to lug a backpack full of vinyl to UBC in those days. We didn't even get CD players until the following year. Cassette decks arrived later. Public Service Announcements were stored on Carts - sort of like the old 8-tracks, but harder to cue up! Now we have music and PSA's - even a few ads - stored on two PCs in the studio. We have 3 CD players, a cassette deck, and two turntables - and we archive the shows on our podcast server. Most weeks I pre-select my playlist and run the show from my iPad using a funky app called DJay, which looks like twin turntables spinning the artwork of the CD in play. 
 
Over these 30 years we have seen so many changes in technology, and revelled in so many new approaches to Roots and Folk music! It isn't easy selecting 50 songs to play each week. I usually start with a bunch of ideas, and find myself with a playlist of around 90 - 100 songs. Then I have to cull those choices, then sort them into a sequence that keeps things interesting - and I hope, connected and engaging enough to keep the listeners' attention if you tune in for the whole 4 hours, or to attract listeners and keep you enthralled for a few songs if you can't be near a radio or computer for the entire show.
 
Four hours! That's longer than an epic movie! Way longer than most radio shows. Yet it never seems quite enough time for me to share all this fabulous music I love so much!
 
Please take a moment to reflect on the music you've encountered on my show, and help keep me on the air - and keep improving our signal and enhancing our digital archive at CiTR. It's hard to imagine how artists could get their music heard without community and campus radio, and CiTR has been going for 80 years now. Our alumni includes CBC legends like Lister Sinclair and Pierre Berton, and unique characters like Narduwar the Human Serviette, jazz show host Gavin Walker, Jamaican reggae guru George Barrett, and so many more.
