Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

Friday May 1st 8pm
Cassie & Maggie NS
St. James Hall, 3214 West 10th Avenue
Tickets $20 ($16 members)

Sisters, cohorts and collaborators, Cassie and Maggie MacDonald have been enchanting audiences far and wide with their infectious energy, driving rhythms and lilting melodies. While staying true to their Celtic roots they bring a breath of fresh air to the genre with their original compositions and arrangements. In addition to showcasing the intricate and dynamic instrumental arrangements that have made them a much sought after act at festivals and venues around the world, Sterling Road, the second studio recording from this powerhouse duo features four vocal tracks, capturing the energy and diversity of their live show.

Cassie says: “We’ve grown so much as musicians and composers since the release of our first record (Fresh Heirs) and we wanted this album to reflect that. Maggie has really come into her own as a vocalist, the songs really showcase her voice and add such a unique element to the recording as a whole”

In the words of Irish legend Cyril O’Donohue with whom the girls toured extensively in Europe last summer “Your (Maggie’s) singing represents one of the most beautiful interpretations of a story through the human voice I have ever heard.”

Sterling Road was recorded in Toronto with Juno award nominated engineer and producer Andrew Collins. With Collins’ bluegrass background, this partnership produced a unique fusion of the girls’ trademark Celtic sound with a hint of bluegrass flavour. The result is a lively, engaging and diverse collection of original and traditional instrumentals and songs. In the words of veteran Sound engineer and producer Al Strickland (who produced many of Rita MacNeil’s albums) Sterling Road is “a beautifully crafted album that showcases the diverse musicality of these two talented sisters”.

You can read a bit more about them in this recent article from a North Carolina newspaper. It includes music and photos to give you a better idea of how they look and sound. http://ocracokeobserver.com/2015/04/05/heard-on-ocracoke-cassie-and-maggie-mcdonald/

We're really excited to bring them to The Rogue for their Vancouver debut! You can buy your tickets here.

"Hayes and Cahill have distinguished themselves by bringing chamber music’s intensity and dynamic control to folk tunes.” - Seattle Times
Martin Hayes is Ireland's most celebrated fiddler these days, and his almost telepathic link with guitarist Dennis Cahill makes their concerts not just amazing nights of Celtic music, but also a sort of transcendental experience! Regular visitors to the Rogue over the past two decades they have also been touring recently as part of the Irish "supergroup" The Gloaming. Thursday April 30th 8pm
& Friday May 1st 8pm
Buffy Ste-Marie SK/HI
Blueshore Stage at Capilano University
BOTH SHOWS SOLD OUT
There are great articles about Buffy Sainte-Marie in today's Vancouver Sun and Georgia Straight (we seem to get some of our best media coverage for shows which have already sold out; too bad. We think all our shows are worthy of this much attention. If you don't believe me, come to our Celtic shows this weekend, for example! They will be incredible!)

Accompanying Buffy is a rocking 3-piece all-Aboriginal band from Indian Reserves in Manitoba: Leroy Constant (Cree) on bass, Jesse Green (Lakota/Ojibwe) on guitar, and Mike Bruyere (Ojibwe) on drums. “They’ve got the energy I need for driving songs like Starwalker and No No Keshagesh and it helps that what I sing about and where a lot of my songs originate is a world they know too: the realities of Native American passion, love, tragedy and music”. She is about to launch a new CD, Power In The Blood, on May 12, so will have plenty of new songs. I wonder if she might have some advance copies of the new record to sell ... www.buffysainte-marie.com

Opening is the wonderful young Kootenay BC singer / songwriter Steph Cameron. I've been a fan of hers for a few months, since the September release of her CD Sad-Eyed Lonesome Lady - which gets lots of airplay on my show. We would love to bring her back for her own concert at The Rogue sometime, so let us know if you like her as much as I do! www.stephcameron.com
