Sweet Alibi have a haunting song called Get It Right on their latest CD, We've Got To. It has an infectiously appealing acoustic reggae style and it's been going through my head repeatedly for the past 6 months or so! Ever since I booked them, in fact. They also do a lovely cover of Woody Guthrie's I Ain't Got No Home - in waltz time. Band members Jess Rae Ayre, Amber Nielsen, and Michelle Anderson come from Winnipeg and won a Western Canadian Folk Music Award for We've Got To. Their music features sublime harmonies, and a beautiful array of songs permeated with influences from folk, soul and pop. I'm really looking forward to hearing them in concert with our sound system (the only time I've seen them was at an acoustic showcase in a small hotel room in Kansas City!) Tom Power of CBC Radio 2 describes the band as simply as this: "If Mumford and Sons and the Supremes had a love child you would name it Sweet Alibi". www.sweetalibi.com

The Rakish Angles launched their excellent second CD, Cottonwood Moon, at The Rogue in 2011. They have a new fiddler / singer, Sarah Fitzpatrick, to complement their lineup of Dan Richter (guitar, vocals), Simon Hocking (mandolin, vocals) and Boyd Norman (bass, vocals). Their original compositions include swing tunes and songs - notably the delightfully ironic Swinging The World By The Tail - and the plaintive waltz, Le Fin. They are great fun to watch and / or to dance to, and have received a whole bunch of nominations for Canadian Folk Music Awards, Independent Music Awards, and Western Canadian Music Awards. We went to Djangofest NW on Whidbey Island last September. It was our first visit to the annual festival of gypsy jazz there, and it was incredible! Amongst the many highlights was the experience of seeing fiddler / singer Leah Zeger with Argentine guitarist Gonzalo Bergara. These young musicians are amazing players! Imagine my delight when we were offered the chance to bring them to town to mark the Rogue's 28th Birthday! They are here to embark on a jazz cruise to California. Leah released a solo CD last year entitled Pour Moi. It's a varied programme of songs and tunes ranging from Hungarian czardas to Romanian horas, Django tunes, songs from movie soundtracks, and more! Gonzalo now makes his home in the USA. His latest CD, Walking Home, is similarly eclectic, and he wrote all the tunes himself! He's a brilliant guitarist and his reverence for gypsy jazz and cinematic themes is exemplary. They will be joined by rhythm guitarist Jeffrey Radaich and bassist Brian Netzley. Our April In Paris festival was a great success the other week. Why not keep that spirit alive?
