Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

The Revelers
Last Sunday's show with The Revelers was incredible! People danced from the very first note and there was a full house of very happy dancers - not bad for a band coming to town for the first time! They will definitely be back. Heck, if we could bring them in every month we would! Their new CD, Get Ready, is one of the best albums I've heard in years! A great variety of upbeat numbers, torch songs, and memorable melodies, with lyrics in English and Cajun French. You can order it from the iTunes music store or www.revelersband.com

Friday May 22nd 8pm
Vancouver Songwriter Showcase!
Chris Ronald Trio

Deanna Knight Trio
St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)
Tickets $20 ($16 members) available online and at Highlife Records, Prussin Music, Red Cat Records, Rufus' Guitar Shop, and also at the door up to showtime on the night.

Derbyshire-born singer songwriter Chris Ronald can often be seen video taping the performers at Bluebird North, SOCAN's Songwriter Series hosted by Shari Ulrich at The Roundhouse every couple of months or so. He's just returned from a tour of Holland, and will make his Rogue debut on Friday accompanied by multi-instrumentalist and celebrated producer / session man John Ellis and bassist Rob Becker. Chris' latest CD, Timeline, was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award last November. There's no shame in finishing a close runner-up to Shari Ulrich! He's a fine storyteller in song, with highlights of the new CD including The Mountaineer - which he entered into a contest to promote the Rocky Mountaineer train, The Busker - a respectful ode to troubadours everywhere, and Chaperone - about relocating to Canada and out to Vancouver with his wife 12 years ago. www.chrisronald.com

Deanna Knight recently featured as a guest singer in the hit musical Scarlet Queen of Mercy at the Russian Hall - presented by the Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret. She is best known as the chanteuse with the Hot Club Of Mars, who performed at last month's gypsy jazz festival April In Paris at the Rogue. She is also a fine songwriter - The Hotties have recorded three of her songs on their two CDs - and of course has a superb voice that lends itself to a wide variety of styles. She will be performing mostly original material this night, accompanied by Mother Of Pearl's Brenda Baird on flute and piano and Van Django's Finn Manniche on cello and guitar. www.deannaknight.ca

We hope you'll take a chance and come out to hear these impressive songwriters at The Rogue on Friday. If you like a well-crafted song sung well and with tasteful accompaniment this show is for you!

Saturday May 30th 8pm
Ten Strings & A Goatskin

Bon Debarras
St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)
Tickets $20 ($16 members) available online and at Highlife Records, Prussin Music, Red Cat Records, Rufus' Guitar Shop, and also at the door up to showtime on the night.

This concert marks the 30th anniversary of my radio show, The Edge On Folk on CiTR fm 101.9 I wanted to have a special concert that night, and we definitely have a fabulous evening of Canadian acoustic roots music for you!  Ten Strings & A Goatskin are a young Celtic trio from PEI, with two nephews of Lennie Gallant - who produced their debut CD, Corbeau - and a cousin. They play fiddle, guitar and bodhran. They all sing - in both official languages. Fierce instrumentals, great harmony singing, and a huge sense of fun are trademarks of this band, and they also add social commentary and topical songs to their repertoire. We are delighted to be able to include Quebec trio Bon Debarras! With HUGE thanks to the Vancouver and Surrey Children's Festivals!! Bon Debarras is another trio, with accordion, guitar, banjo, harmonica, double bass and voices and coups de pieds they generate a unique sound that's both traditional Quebecois and contemporary folk - and extremely enjoyable and entertaining to boot. Bon Debarras will be performing at the Surrey Arts Centre / Bear Creek Park on Saturday May 23rd at 2:15pm - all their other performances in Surrey are Sold Out. They will also perform at Granville Island next week, with 5 shows at 10:30am and 12:30pm at Performance Works on May 26th and May 28th, and at 12:30pm on May 29th. And you can hear them LIVE on CiTR on Saturday May 30th at 11am on The Edge On Folk 30th Birthday Edition! The only way to catch them in an evening performance is to come to the concert on Saturday 30th! For more information on this excellent band click here

Coming this Summer
Tom Russell launches his double CD The Rose of Roscrae with two shows at St. James Hall (Friday June 26th and Saturday June 27th) These shows are selling fast, so book now to avoid disappointment. We have Scots Blues singer Maggie Bell (Stone the Crows etc.) making her Canadian debut on July 9th at The Rogue with Dave Kelly (The Blues Band etc.) on guitar. We may have a Folkfest Hangover this year too. Rory McLeod is around, for example, and we'd love to present him again. Oysterband are back on August 13th, and two days later we will present the legendary Irish piper Finbar Furey with his band. More details later...

Festival Deals
We are offering discount tickets to the Vancouver and Mission Folk Festivals again this year. Rogue members can buy as many tickets as you like for these events! Adult passes for Vancouver (July 17 - 19) are $135 to June 16th. If we have enough interest we can also offer Seniors' weekend tickets, so please let us know. N.B. a senior can't buy tickets for their friends as well - unless they too are seniors. We are still waiting for confirmation on the Mission tickets, but it looks as though all the prices will be the same as last year - except that Camping will be $30 per adult for the weekend this time. Nigerian Juju music legend King Sunny Ade with a 20-piece band is one of the headliners at Mission (July 24 - 26) this year! Once we have ironed out all the prices we will put them up on our website so please check for the latest updates.

Radio Waves
As I mentioned, next week is the 30th Anniversary of The Edge On Folk, so this week and next I'll dig up some favourites from the past 3 decades and add them to the mix of new releases and upcoming Rogues. If you have any requests please email me and I'll try to squeeze them in. New this week are CDs by Eilen Jewell, The Milk Carton Kids, The Revelers, Della Mae, Eliza Carthy & Tim Eriksen, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, Trio Da Kali, Corinne West (with Kelly Joe Phelps), Buffy Sainte-Marie and more. Please tune in to CiTR fm 101.9 from 8am to noon every Saturday. The show is streamed live on www.citr.ca and podcasts of shows from the last decade are available there as well. I hope you can join me!

Radio Rogue is available 24/7 on our website, with lots of new releases, including many of the songs from Tom Russell's fabulous new epic release The Rose of Roscrae

Rogue AGM
Things have been a little hectic lately, and I haven't had time to organize the AGM yet. It's usually held in May, but this year it will take place on Sunday June 21st, I think. Full details of venue and time etc. will be announced next week.

Shorefest
We are working with our wonderful media friends and sponsors LG104.3fm to present music before the fireworks on The Rogue Stage at Sunset Beach on Saturday July 25th, Wednesday July 29th, and Saturday August 1st. The line up will include Harry Manx, Colin Linden, The Bills, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer, Dawn Pemberton, Sadie Campbell, The Bros. Landreth, and many more. There'll also be a Beer Garden this year, and the event will start - and finish - a bit earlier to avoid sound clashes with Bard on the Beach, just across the water in Vanier Park. Full details will be announced next week.
