St. James Hall Venue Improvement Campaign
Now that the venerable hall has been purchased by the City of Vancouver for the good of the community you might think that we don't need to worry about it any more. Not so!! There are many venue improvements which desperately need to be done, and the City will not pay for these.

  • The floor in the hall has been sanded down so many times that it if we sand it again we will be downstairs! We have found a number of new flooring options which will sit atop the old floor and last for decades. The cost will be around $50,000, maybe less. We may even be able to install the new floor in December. If we can secure the funds.
  • Ventilation is a major problem! The hall is uncomfortable on warm days and in Summer it is virtually uninhabitable! We do not want to install instrusive and noisy air conditioning. We are exploring some ventialtion options and passive heat exchange systems. We might even be able to install large, slowly-rotating fans that draw in cooler air from the north side of the hall and expel warm air out to the south. This will not be inexpensive either, and will probably not be possible until next Summer at the earliest.
  • Seating in the hall is a mixture of chairs and pews. We are looking at options to either replace the pews with more chairs or to install fitted cushions on the pews.


These are just three of the venue improvements we are seeking to implement in the coming months. We will receive matching funds for every dollar we raise over the next 12 months or so. We are planning a number of fundraising events this fall and in the spring, We will keep you posted, of course.

Meanwhile, St. James Community Square Society - which now leases the whole building from the City of Vancouver, and which has been running the facility for well over 20 years - has a donation link on their website for contributions of $100 or more. Tax receipts will be issued for all donations of $10 or more, and these smaller donations can be made by phone at the St. James office on 604-739-9373.

As part of the fundraising campaign, we have been asked to make an additonal, temporary, contribution. We will be adding a $1 surcharge on our tickets for the next 12 months. This will be collected separately at the door so please bring a loonie! Thanks!!

  • The BC Entertainment Hall of Fame recognizes those who have left an indelible mark on BC’s entertainment industry and cultural landscape.
  • The 2016 Pioneer inductees include Rogue Folk Club's Artistic Director Steve Edge and singer/songwriter Linda McRae.
  • The official awards ceremony will take place at 7:30pm as part of this evening's show. Don't miss out on this historic event!

Linda McRae is a Canadian born, US based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has built a following through amazing albums and a tireless international touring schedule. Performing on banjo, guitar and accordion her warm and world-weary voice, unforgettable melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, make McRae a captivating and sought-after artist.  Linda has performed in venues as diverse as Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre and New Folsom Prison, where she performs and facilitates writing workshops for the inmates. These experiences lead to the creation of her Express Yourself Writing Workshops currently being presented in detox centres, alternative schools, and youth and adult correctional facilities across North America. Linda’s last album, released to great critical acclaim, was produced by Steve Dawson, another former Vancouverite now living in Nashville.

Thad Beckman has been performing professionally since 1980 in clubs, theatres, radio and television in The USA, Canada and Europe including several performances at many festivals, most notably The Kerrville Folk Festival (main stage) and The Portland Waterfront Blues Festival. He has recorded nine albums of his own trademark bluesy material. From 2009 to 2015, Thad was guitarist for Tom Russell, including performances on The Late, Late Show with David Letterman, Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble and theaters, clubs, radio, television and festivals throughout the USA, Canada and Europe.

Here's a fun fact:  Thad and Linda first met when they shared a night at The Rogue last November, and now they are touring together!

Further Aventures



Maybe this should read "furthur adventures" (for all you Ken Kesey / Timothy Leary fans out there!) The above photo is the sort of mayhem one can inflict on photos using a free App called Prisma on your smart phone or tablet!

Margaret & I are heading to Denmark from Edmonton on Monday. We're going on a Baltic cruise and spending a few days touring Copenhagen and Ribe before winding up the month at the renowned Tonder Folk Festival.
