Three great new CDs from across BC will be launched this weekend at The Rogue!

Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

1. John Reischman & The Jaybirds CD Launch, Friday May 12th at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Ave.)

JOHN REISCHMAN & THE JAYBIRDS play the Rogue Folk Club this Friday night!
Their brand new CD 'On That Other Green Shore' - hot off the presses - will be available at the show. For this recording, they've chosen material to showcase the signature Jaybirds blend of old-time and bluegrass music, this time with an added emphasis on the bluesier side of bluegrass and a surprise foray into the Beatles songbook, for good measure.
Their seventh album, 'On That Other Green Shore' marks a turning point for the Jaybirds not just stylistically, but also because its release coincides with the departure of our long-time guitarist, Jim Nunally, and the entrance of new Jaybird compadre, Patrick Sauber. Many of you may know him as the banjo player with Laurie Lewis and The Right Hands, or as the guitar player in John Jorgenson’s bluegrass band, or maybe as the son (and musical partner) of legendary old-time fiddler Tom Sauber. Or maybe you know him from his work with Christopher Guest in the film “A Mighty Wind”, where he was a key member of the New Main Street Singers. Or you might have seen him playing with John Fogerty, or on the Tonight Show, or with Tim O’Brien.
Don''t miss one of the most talented and most acclaimed bluegrass bands that the west coast has to offer!

2. Andy Hillhouse CD launch & Eisenhauers CD launch, Saturday May 13th at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Ave.)
Guitarist and singer Andy Hillhouse had his entrance to the world of professional folk music began with the creation of his own group Mad Pudding, who released four CDs in the late 1990s and performed widely across 2 continents. Now as a song interpreter and specialist on Celtic rhythm guitar, he has played with several of Canada’s most respected, unique and exciting acoustic musicians including Pierre Schryer, Zav RT, and The McDades, with whom he won a Juno award in 2006. Andy is a former member of the Juno nominated vocal ensemble, Musica Intima. Andy has PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of Toronto, with specialization focused on the music of the late Canadian fiddler/composer Oliver Schroer. Now Andy is launching his first solo CD, Passages, with a band that includes Cam Wilson of Van Django on fiddle, and Jeremiah McDade on wind instruments. Read Tony Montague's article about Andy in this week's Georgia Straight

It has been said that all Canadian writing inevitably reflects the almost impenetrable vastness of the land and the great distances that separate us. If The Road We Once Knew by the Eisenhauers, the husband and wife duo of Jeremy Eisenhauer and Sheree Plett Eisenhauer, is any indication, you’d be hard pressed not to come to the same conclusion about Canadian music. Simple, spare and heartbreaking in its directness, the concepts of distance, time and the wavering arcs of separation and reunion have rarely been as compellingly explored as they are in this powerful debut album, which was released by Steve Dawson's Black Hen Records earlier this month.

3. The Rogue Folkers Jam, Sunday May 14th, 11am - 1pm, Aberthau Mansion, 4397 West 2nd Ave.
Do you play a musical instrument? Are you interested in playing/singing with other musicians in a jam session setting?  Come to Aberthau Mansion at the West Point Grey Community Centre on Sunday morning and meet fellow musicians to play a variety of genres in a beautiful setting. The amazing acoustic quality of the mansion makes it ideal for unamplified music and voices. This is a great opportunity for musicians to get together and experience the fun and variety of music jams and there could be the opportunity to perform in the Mansion at a later date. Musicians from the Rogue Folk Club will be available to lead the jam sessions.

Aberthau Mansion is a beautiful heritage Tudor-style mansion located at West 2nd Avenue and Trimble Streets. The grounds are great for picnics when summer arrives, and the house is 2 minutes from Jericho Beach. There's lots of parking.

10. Radio Waves
Last week there were some technological challenges at CiTR and I was feeling very much under the weather too. There was no fm signal at all, and the transmitting computer was down as well. I had no idea if anyone could hear me. Thanks to Scott, the station's trusty technician, the system started running around 10:30am and the podcast recorder saved the entire four hour show - warts and all!

This week's edition of The Saturday Edge On Folk will be broadcast live on fm 101.9 and also online from 8am to noon on www.citr.ca

The Podcasts archives are now up-to-date

11. New PBS TV Documentary
