1. RogueFEST, Sunday July 29th, noon - 6pm, Chain & Forge Stage, Granville Island This is it, folks! The Rogue's first free festival of folk music takes place on the hottest day of the year! We are, mercifully, in the shade of the Granville Street Bridge for most of the day, and part of the Bar Garden extends into the Parkade adjacent to the stage, so come on down to revel in some mighty fine LIVE BC Folk & Roots Music, with some tasty food served up by three local food trucks on site, and some very good, cold, craft beer and fine wine too.
The action kicks off at noon - maybe a bit earlier - with some music chosen by Yours Truly from the vast library at my disposal! Then at 12:30pm there's a real treat for Bluegrass fans - and players - when Sue Malcolm's Slow Pitch Jam will take to the stage for a participatory helping of some of B.C.'s finest Bluegrass and acoustic country / folk music!
There will then be a break of around 30 minutes - more music from my collection, or perhaps more jamming off-stage for the intrepid Bluegrass jam community (or maybe lunch from one of the food trucks?)
At 2pm, we switch to Rockabilly with the excellent Rocket Revellers - the house band at Gastown's Revel Room(Michael Van Eyes on piano, Jimmy Roy on pedal steel, and more!) Be ready to dance, folks! This band is HOT HOT HOT!
We take another little break before the wonderful Viper Central take the stage at 3:30. Fresh from triumphant appearances at the Vancouver and Mission Folk Festivals the past two weekends, the Vipers will serve up their delicious mix of old time tunes, new songs with a historical bent about western Canada, and stomping Bluegrass and square dance music.
Then there's one more intermission before we are treated to some supercharged gypsy jazz from the amazing Van Django to round things off in the warm sun. They make music as if the spirit of Django himself had re-interpreted modern pop songs and classical music anthems and made them into a mouthwatering melange of manouche music!
The Beer Garden will be open from noon to 6, with last-call at 5:30, and the food trucks will be on hand as well.
It all takes place on the new Chain & Forge outdoor stage on Granville Island, courtesy of the generous support of CMHC. Thank you, Canada!!
Oh yes, did I mention that the event is FREE!? OK, you have to pay for the food and drink, but the entertainment won't cost you a dime! So please come on down and help put Rogue Folk on the map. We seem to have been flying under many peoples' radar for over 30 years; this is our chance to shine in the bright, warm sun!
