1. T. Nile & Band, Thursday May 30th, 8pm, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)
T. Nile is a Canadian performing songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist who mixes genres: gritty western guitars, soulful harmonies, future-synth arpeggios, dark beats, and electro-pop accents. This is quite a long way from her early days in a Galiano Island cabin on the wild coast of British Columbia.

She was groomed for an unconventional life. Her father performed as 'Dan The Man, The One Man Band', following in the footsteps of his inspiration and mentor Jesse Fuller, a street performer turned influential blues musician who famously penned 'San Francisco Bay Blues' and inspired Bob Dylan to pick up the harmonica. From the age of six until her teenage years Nile accompanied her father as they toured the West Coast and Australia in an RV.

2. Searson, Friday May 31st, 8pm, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)
For over a decade now, Searson has toured the world with their unique blend of high energy fiddling, passionate vocals and intricate step dancing. At the core of Searson, are Colleen and Erin Searson, two sisters who hail from the Ottawa Valley. Colleen and Erin have been immersed in the Ottawa Valley music tradition their entire lives. Erin trained classically through the Royal Conservatory of Music in piano beginning at age 4. Colleen has been studying violin and fiddle methods from many styles around the world since age 9, and both sisters began step dance lessons before their 9th birthdays. They began performing locally and competing at step dance and fiddle contests throughout Ontario as children, which gave them the invaluable experience they needed to become accomplished performers and musicians. Some of you will have witnessed Erin's piano magic at the remarkable concert put on by The Step Crew at The Rogue last July. What a show that was!!
Like their live shows, Searson’s recordings reflect their eclectic tastes, while maintaining strong roots in the tradition they grew up in. In May 2015, Searson filmed a brand new national series for CBC TV called Still Standing. Concurrently, they ran a successful crowdfunding campaign in support of their album Stars Above the Farm. They’ve hosted three bus tours in Ireland with their Kansas City friends, The Elders. In 2017 they released, Homegrown, to honour their Canadian heritage and to celebrate Canada’s 150 years since Confederation by featuring songs by Canadian artists, songwriters (Bryan Adams, Neil Young, Chantal Kreviazuk, Robbie Robertson), and instrumentalists (Natalie MacMaster, Denis Lanctot) who have influenced Searson in meaningful ways. This year, Searson will release their milestone tenth full length album, as well as their first live performance DVD. Both recordings document their performance in front of a live Ottawa Valley audience at the historical Neat Coffee Shop in Burnstown, Ontario.
They continue to tour across Canada, the United States, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Portugal, and Spain. Wherever they travel and whatever projects they undertake, their passion for their music and their roots shines through and connects with audiences in a memorable way. We urge you to come on down to The Rogue to witness some spirited fiddling and dancing and to revel in some of the richest traditions of our amazing nation!

3. Contra Dance w/ The Sybaritic Stringband, Saturday June 1st, 7:30pm, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)
Vancouver's Sybaritic Stringband present the final dance before the Summer break this Saturday. (I can't believe it's June already!) The sprung dance floor, open windows, and resonant beams of the lovely hall are the perfect venue for a live band playing social dance music with a caller / instructor to guide even the most inexperienced novices through dance moves like do-si-do and strip the willow, and a la main left and right! The music is fiddle-driven, Celtic and Quebecois trad and contemporary compositions in the tradition. It's lots of fun, and all dances are taught on the spot. Come alone or bring a partner. Admission is $15 at the door. Bring a home-made snack to share and it's only $10! After the Summer recess, the next dance will be held on Saturday September 7th.
4. AGM Reminder, Saturday July 6th, 6pm, St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)
The Annual General Meeting is your chance to participate in a vital component in the Rogue's continued existence. Come along and vote for the new slate of directors, read the annual report, and show your support as we head into our 33rd year of operation! You can then stick around for a wonderful concert presented by Victoria gypsy jazz quartet Brishen - featuring the amazing guitarist Quinn Bachand and the superb clarinettist / saxophonist Eric Vanderbilt-Matthews. Brishen will launch their 3rd CD this night, and there will also be an opening set of Quebecois trad with Montreal duo Zigue (Claude Methe on fiddle, and Dana Whittle on guitar.)

6. Volunteer Call
We have amazing volunteers who work at our concerts, doing everything from setting up the tables and chairs, working the bar, selling tickets at the door, selling merchandise for the performers, and selling memberships and ticket bundles.
- We would like to improve our environmental "footprint", by encouraging the use of refillable drink containers and using compostable plates and cups, redoubling our recycling, and adding composting. Would you like to help form this new volunteer group at our shows? If so, contact Crews Controller Brian Jones on volunteer@roguefolk.bc.ca
- We are looking for an archivist to help catalogue the considerable amount of literature and recordings and photos we have generated and accumulated over the past three decades or so. If you are interested please email concerts@roguefolk.bc.ca
- Billets. We are always on the lookout for billets for our performers. There are no hotels near the venue. We have a wonderful deal with the excellent Best Western Chateau Granville, but their Summer rates are very high. Many performers are more than happy to stay in billets, so if you have a spare room or two (or can accommodate a larger band, thereby saving us a lot more expense) please let us know - especially if you live fairly close to St. James Hall, or to a ferry terminal, for example. In exchange you will receive complimentary tickets to the show and have the added treat of having world-renowned musicians stay in your house and maybe join you for breakfast! Once again, please email concerts@roguefolk.bc.ca if you can help.
- Vancouver Folk Music Festival - Rogue Folk Booth. We will have a small tent at the festival's Community Village once again this year, to spread the word about our series and to demonstrate just how good is the whole musical and social experience of "Roguery". We will have a limited number of wristbands available for each day of the event (July 19-21 - 2 on Friday and 4 each on Saturday and Sunday). Volunteers will be required to work at least two 2 hour shifts on the day they choose. The rest of the day is yours to explore the festival! 7. Vancouver and Mission Folk Festival ticket deals for Rogues
The Vancouver Folk Music Festival runs July 19-21 at Jericho Beach Park. It's one of the musical highlights of the year for so many of us! Fully paid-up Rogue Folk members will receive 10% off the Early Bird price right up to July 10th! You just need us to give you a code word and you can buy your tickets directly from the festival.
We also have a discount code for tickets - and camping - at the Mission Folk Festival (July 26-28, at the picturesque Fraser River Heritage Park, just off Hwy 7 to the east of Mission, 80km east of Vancouver).
- Adult weekend passes are $75 (as opposed to $90 for everyone else)
- Student / Senior Weekend passes are $70 ($85 for everyone else)
- Youth (13-18, must be accompanied by a parent or guardian) weekend passes are $40 ($50 for everyone else)

8. Does anyone keep back issues of The Rogue Folk Review?
We are continuously building our history files, and have been scanning back issues of our old publication - The Rogue Folk Review. This process is almost complete, but we have been unable to locate the December 1996 edition. If anyone has that one, please let us know!
9. What happened at the Rogue 10 years ago this week?
Speaking of history, on May 30th 2009 we presented Irish singer Luka Bloom at St. James Hall. Sadly he hasn't been back to B.C. since. I last saw him at the Doolin Folk Festival in County Clare in June 2015 and he implored me to bring him back to Vancouver. No luck so far. Too bad. He's great!! We'll just have to keep trying, I guess...

On this week's edition of the Saturday Edge On Folk we ring in a whole new month with some June songs, and of course, heaps of new releases and songs featuring upcoming performers, festivals previews, and some old faves and whatever else demands my attention as I trawl through my iTunes library ... Radio Rogue has a new playlist. Right now it's mostly some of my favourite Celtic music from the past 30 years, with a liberal sprinkling of music from Sweden's Ale Moller Band, whose Senegalese singer and kora player, Solo Cissokho, passed away last week. R.I.P. Kora Man.
I'll change the playlist again next week to something a bit more current.
