Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

Hi everyone

We didn't have a concert last week, but there's lots coming up so here's the latest news from Rogue Towers.

1. CBC North By Northwest, this Saturday at 7:00 - 7:30am, fm 88.1, am 690

I'll be Sheryl McKay's guest this Saturday morning, bright and early. Well, early.

2. The Edge On Folk, Saturday 8am to noon, CiTR fm 101.9 and www.citr.ca

This will be the final show in the 24th year of my radio stint at CiTR. Yes, folks, every week for 25 years. Please join me for four hours of great musical memories, concert and festival previews and new releases in the wide world of roots music. Next week: 25th Birthday party with special guests Wake The Dead (and champagne and orange juice!) Total mayhem!!

3. Quebecois fiddle workshop with Olivier Demers, Sunday May 30th, 1pm to 3pm, at Prussin Music, 3607 West Broadway

This is a tremendous opportunity for fiddle players to learn some of those incredible crooked tunes and techniques from a master of Quebcois fiddle music, Olivier Demers, of Le Vent Du Nord. Space is limited, so don't delay! Call Prussin Music on 604-736-3036 to reserve a space. The cost is just $40 for 2 hours with one of the very best fiddlers - and teachers - in Canada.

4. Le Vent Du Nord, Sunday May 30th 8pm, St. James Hall, 3214 West 10th Avenue

Olivier Demers will be joined by his esteemed bandmates Nicolas Boulerice (vielle a roue, piano, vocals), Rejean Brunet (accordion, bass, vocals), and Simon Beaudry on guitar and vocals. They are completing their Canadian tour in support of their hot new CD, La Part Du Feu (Borealis Records) which was delayed by the eruption of that Icelandic volcano with the unpronounceable name. They were stranded in Europe and now they come to B.C. to play the Rogue and a couple of shows in Vernon. This a very versatile band, combining songs from Old France, and Quebec with original compositions and of course those amazing crooked tune medleys as well. There are still plenty of tickets left, so bring all your friends and party on with this superb quartet from La Belle Province. More info: www.leventdunord.com

5. Shore fm 104.3 update

There are still a couple of chances left to win tickets to see Colin James in a private concert in Whistler this Saturday. Tune in to the Shore for your chance to win a pass to Music On The Mountain, which includes a night at the Fairmont Hotel and a spa visit the next day, plus a BBQ and concert.

Shore is also holding a Sounds of Summer song contest for solos and duos. Submit your song by this Friday and you could be opening for Colin James or appearing at Shorefest 2010 before the fireworks in July.

Shore have recorded a few concerts at the Rogue in recent months, and these shows are going to be broadcast on the next few Sundays at 9pm. Full details on www.shore104.com

The schedule is as follows:

Sunday May 30 - Lee Havey Osmond
Sunday June 6 - T. Nile (I think with Twilight Hotel)
Sunday June 13 - Wil
Sunday June 20 - Matt Andersen
Sunday June 27 - The John Henrys
Sunday July 4 - Madison Violet

6. Wake The Dead, Friday June 4th 8pm, St. James Hall, 3214 West 10th Avenue

This is a very special concert for me, celebrating the 25th anniversary of my radio show with one of my all-time favourite bands, Wake The Dead. The San Francisco septet features Kevin Carr on uilleann pipes and fiddle, Sylvia Herold on vocals, Maureen Brennan on Celtic harp, Danny Carnahan on vocals and guitar, Brian Rice on percussion, Cindy Browne on acoustic bass, and the extremely versatile Paul Kotapish on a variety of stringed and fretted instruments. Their repertoire blends the finest songs of the Grateful Dead with sublime celtic airs and rollicking reels and jigs from Ireland and Scotland - and Canada! It's a wonderful way of presenting these amazing songs. They have three excellent CDs available - at this concert - for the first time in Vancouver. If you've been listening for 25 years or just a couple of weeks it would be great to see you at the show. For more information visit www.wakethedead.org
