Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

Season's Greetings from the Rogue!!

Just a small number of items this week:

1. Radio Waves

The Student Union Building at UBC will be locked up and out of bounds for the next two Saturdays, so I won't be able to host The Edge On Folk on Christmas Day nor New Years Day. Instead, CiTR is broadcasting a Christmas Mix, and I've given them a pile of songs to play in my time-slot tomorrow - 8am to noon - on 101.9 fm and www.citr.ca

Meanwhile, I have made a special 12 hour Christmas selection for Radio Rogue, which can be accessed through our website www.roguefolk.bc.ca (Click on Folk Music Resources, and select Radio Rogue, then follow the instructions.) It ends with songs of Christmas Eve, my special Nativity section (irreverence warning applies!), then songs about Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and on to New Year's Eve. The majority of the playlist is a random selection of seasonal songs from around the world. The whole cycle repeats every 12 hours, so you can tune in any time and for any length of time and I guarantee you won't hear very many - if any - of these songs in the Mall!

2. Year-End / Beginning Party

We are holding the annual party for Volunteers and Rogue Friends and Families on Sunday January 16th 2011. It's a musical pot luck buffet so please bring a dish, family, instruments, voices. There are lots of door prizes and some excellent beverages. Please email me if you'd like to attend and we'll give you the details.

3. House Concerts next week

Tony Montague is hosting two evenings of great music in House Concerts next week.

27 DECEMBER (Monday - a holiday) at 7 pm,

- KURAI MUBAIWA and JAMES MUJURU- Zimbabwean trance and dance by local hero Kurai Mubaiwa and his friend James Mujuru playing marimbas, the ancient mbiras [thumb piano] and gourd-shakers, sing, and dance. Original and traditional music from the East African savannah that will renergize you.

And - LOS PAPERBOYS TRIO - New music with Celtic, Mexican, and jazz roots and branches, featuring Los Paperboys founder Tom Landa on strings and vocal cords, Kalissa Hernandez on fiddle, and Nick LaRiviere on bass and trombone. Tom and the Paperboys have been prime movers and shakers of West Coast music for almost 20 years.

Each group to play two sets of 50 minutes, during the break the audience upstairs goes downstairs and vice versa

**********

2 JANUARY (Sunday) at 7 pm,

MARIA IN THE SHOWER - Steeped in blues, alt-country, retro-pop, and jazz Maria in the Shower is not a burlesque show but a highly original band that performs with theatrical flair and steampunkish style - trumpet, accordion, acoustic guitar, bass, and sundry instruments of percussion, including chains and hammers.

And LACHE CERCEL & ROMA SWING - Lache is one of the brightest stars of the Romani music scene in North America - a virtuosic and charismatic player with a vast and varied repertoire drawn from classical musc, swing jazz in the mould of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, and traditional tunes from Eastern Europe

Each group to play two sets of 50 minutes, during the break the audience upstairs goes downstairs and vice versa

* Suggested donation each evening is on a sliding scale of

$15 - $25 - for seats, $10 - $15 - for floorspace (cushions provided)

Space limited, 48 people max. All money to the artists

By reservation only (to keep it legal)
