Canadian Traditional Music

Is Alive & Well and Living at The Rogue this weekend!

We have two shows for you this weekend, celebrating new CDs of traditional-based music by a 6-time Canadian fiddle champion and a much-loved local folk band!

Mark Sullivan is a 3 time Canadian Junior Fiddle Champion and a 3 time Canadian Fiddle Champion. You may have seen him guesting with Carlos Nunez last weekend, or gigging with The Paperboys down the years. This brilliant fiddler and composer brings his new CD - The Gathering Room -  and excellent backing band to The Rogue on Friday September 26th at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue.)

He will be accompanied by guitarists Craig McGregor and Andy Hillhouseplus versatile bassist Rob Becker. He had hoped to bring Dan Lapp with him, but alas, that man is SO busy! No matter, though: Mark and co. will get your toes a-tappin' with a fine selection of original fiddle tunes - and more familiar tunes too - in true Canadian Old Time, Celtic and Swing styles.

There will also be an opening set from Canadian Folk Music Award winner for Young Performer of 2013Kierah Raymond (pictured below.) This prodigiously gifted fiddle player, composer and teacher is still in her teens, and graduated from the Royal Canadian Academy of Music with one of the highest grades ever awarded. She has spent many months in Ireland and to my mind at least is one of the very best young Celtic musicians to come out of western Canada.

Tickets are available at Highlife Records, Prussin Music, Rufus' Guitar Shop and on line on www.roguefolk.bc.ca/concerts/ev14101620

Celebrating the launch of their new CD, ImagesQuartete a Tete (Vanessa Kay, Michael Pratt, Lynn McGown & Michael Viens) play The Rogue House at St. James Hall on Saturday September 27th at 8pm!
This will be a rollicking good night of traditional music and song at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue). Michael Pratt & Lynn McGown have been stalwart players on the local folk scene for many years, founded the Jericho Folk Club, and run a Music School and clothing and jewelry store - and so much more! - calledCeltic Traditions on West 10th Avenue in Kitsilano.

The new CD, Images, opens with a traditional BC song collected by the late BC folk song collector Phil Thomas that sets the mood perfectly: strong vocal harmonies and a sense of history celebrating our roots. Michael Pratt wrote the title song, a poignant number about the power of family photographs to keep our loved ones close wherever they are now. He also wrote a couple of instrumental medleys showcasing his dexterity on fiddle and concertina (how great it is to hear him playing again after his bicycle accident a couple of years back!) There's a song written by Phil's late wife Hilda Thomas, and a great cover of Patrick Kavanagh's Raglan Road. Several contemporary songs by famous composers like Leonard Cohen, Dougie MacLean and Hank Williams are well known, but for me the standouts are the traditional song Tamlin and a Jenny Lester composition, The River Mother Nature & Me. The pick of the bunch, though, is a song written by Colleen Kwade called Soul.

Quartete a Tete are renowned for getting everyone to join in and celebrate music together. They will be augmented by Craig McGregor on guitar and Simon Kendallon accordion. It will be a grand old night of BC Trad! Come and join us!

"Gorgeous, sun-struck acoustic soul" - Globe & Mail

Vancouver's Reid Jamieson and his wife Carolyn Mill also have a great new CD, Juniper's Kitchen, and they celebrate its launch next Friday October 3rd at St. James Hall

Reid Jamieson shines his light with an incredible voice, therapeutic lyrics, and a magical way with melodies. A regular on CBC’s Vinyl Cafe, and winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (folk), Reid has recorded with Cowboy Junkies, Samantha Parton (Be Good Tanyas), Sarah Harmer and various members of Blue Rodeo. This time he is recording with an especially special guest…the missus! 12 years in the making, Juniper's Kitchen is a little Johnny & June meets Fleetwood Mac – and it's all about the songs.
