This is Canadian roots music with a major make-over. Crack songwriting, brilliant and warped arrangements and stunning instrumental solos unite under the banner of a savvy eclecticism that's always been the band's guiding light. The Wheat in the Barley pulls together a lot of great influences into one package: Celtic, Slavic, French Canadian, Yiddish, Cajun and more. With an impressive array of instruments at their command and a high-energy songlist, they put on a show that's as danceable as it is listenable.
Please JOIN US for a rollicking wrap-up concert celebrating our last 20 years of playing insanely great folk music tunes and songs from around the world! We are taking over The St. James Hall for our last and best concert of the year. The whole 6-pack will be there including Mickey and Ed, our hard-driving rhythm section, along with a few guests and the great Rogue Folk Club volunteers who really know how to host a concert.
Be prepared for a rousing revue of the best tunes from the past 20 years, along with some great new songs and instrumentals. Some of our original numbers have evolved so radically over the past two decades, you might not even recognize them! Folk music truly is a living, breathing creature — in our case, breathing fire!
There will be refreshments served, and lots of snacks as well. And, of course, we'll have ample quantities of our recent CDs including a fresh pressing of After The Battle, our third. Save your ticket stub for the door prize draw!
ADVANCE TICKETS are available at a discount from Tapestry Music at 3607 West Broadway in Vancouver (604-736-3036), or at 1335 Johnston Rd. in White Rock (604-538-0906). Our band members also have some on hand for sale, and we can also take guaranteed reservations for pickup at the door by phone at 604-506-6916. As the hall is cozy and intimate with main floor seating for fewer than 120, early ticket purchase is advised.Tickets are $22 in advance of $24 at the door. Rogue Folk Club members will get their usual $4 discount off those prices, refunded at the door if bought at the advance price. Doors open at 7:00 pm, concert starts at 8:00 sharp.
Partial proceeds of our ticket sales will be donated to help restore the St. James Hall, a beautiful old former church and now a thriving community centre, to top condition for presenting live performances.
Reviews
"What an incredible group! What does a guy have to do to follow an act like that — set his beard on fire??" - Valdy - Panorama Music Fest 2005
"Live or on disc, The Wheat in the Barley is an altogether superior ensemble. Folk, world, jazz, a little funk, reggae and Cajun, all co-exist peacefully and passionately on their latest CD, Can't Draw The Curtain. There are few bands that can move from a traditional Celtic tune to a Yiddish theatre gem, to a Blue Rodeo cover, to more-than-solid originals. These folks can. With one foot in the tradition and the other somewhere in the future, The Wheat In The Barley keeps getting better and better. This is music to make you exercise your feet and your brain!" - Gary Cristall - Artistic Director (1978 – 1994), Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Music Officer (1994 – 2000), Canada Council For The Arts
"The Wheat In The Barley blend their many musical grains into a very hearty meal indeed. They bring the rural dance music of many cultures together and sprinkle them liberally with songs of working people and their pioneering exploits, stirring them up with excellent musicianship and creative arrangements." - Steve Edge - Artistic Director Rogue Folk Club, Vancouver, BC.
