Two musical mavericks with undeniable chemistry reimagine classic blues, soul and jazz standards.
Guitarist Charlie Hunter and vocalist Lucy Woodward joined forces in 2018 and the chemistry was undeniable. Within a year they released their debut duo album, Music!Music!Music!, bringing their thrilling intensity to reimaginings of blues hits by Blind Willie Johnson and Bessie Smith, Nina Simone’s soulful songs and jazz standards popularized by Ella Fitzgerald and Teresa Brewer. “It was just fun, man. I’ve done so many records in my lifetime, but this is the first record I’ve ever done that is really a partnership with a singer,” says Hunter.
Charlie and Lucy are known for excelling in different genres, yet the two veteran musicians have been running in similar circles before pairing up for touring in 2018. With a career spanning 16 years and almost 20 albums, virtuoso guitarist Charlie Hunter has worked with the likes of Norah Jones, Mos Def, John Mayer, and D’Angelo. He is widely considered the authority on the seven and eight – string guitar and continues to stun audiences with his ability to simultaneously bust out tasty bass parts, melodic leads and swinging rhythms. Lucy Woodward has been blazing her own path since the 2003 release of her Top 40 radio hit “Dumb Girls”. Not settling for the pop industry standards, she later released albums on the legendary jazz Verve label and on Snarky Puppy label, GroundUP Music, after much collaboration with the band. She has sung live with with Pink Martini and WDR Big Band and has sung background vocals for icons such as Rod Stewart, Celine Dion, and Barbra Streisand. Charlie and Lucy toured much of 2018 and along with a drummer, they recorded an album based on pocket-heavy renditions of vintage pop and classic standards ranging from Blind Willie Johnson to Terence Trent D’Arby to Nina Simone (2019 release).
Environmental Initiative: Like many organizations, the Rogue is concerned about the environment. We are doing our best to separate and recycle wherever we can. We have introduced compostable cups at all shows. We will continue our existing policy of voluntary donations for the cups for the remaining 2019 shows. Starting in 2020, we will be charging 25 cents for all cups (beer, wine and coffee). We encourage people to reuse their cups if they return to the bar for another. We also invite you to bring your own cup or glass. Beer drinkers can choose to consume right out of the can. These may seem like small things, but they are an important contribution to cleaning up our planet.
