Hi everyone
The weekend is almost upon us, and there are some exceptional concerts coming up!
Dervish, Friday September 21st
One of Ireland's finest traditional bands returns with a new CD, "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves" (yes, they sing THAT song!) We've heard a few tracks from it, and it sounds wonderful. There are still tickets available at the Capilano College Theatre Box Office, 604-990-7810 www.dervish.ie, more details...
Peter Yarrow interviewed on The Edge On Folk
Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul & Mary, has just published a new illustrated book of "Puff The Magic Dragon", and Kidsbooks on Broadway are presenting a concert with him accompanied by his daughter Bethany and her partner Rufus Cappadoccia (Canadian cellist. They are the duo Bethany & Rufus who played the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in 2006). The show is at St. James Hall on Tuesday September 25th at 7pm. Tickets are $5, from Kidsbooks and at the door. Bring your ticket to the store and receive $5 off the price of the new book.
I'll be interviewing him just after 9am on Saturday, September 22nd, on The Edge On Folk on CiTR fm 101.9 and www.citr.ca. Might even play the song, too! (It always used to make me cry when I was a little boy. He's written a happier last verse now, so I reckon I should be able to cope ...)
Eliza Carthy at St. James Hall, Saturday September 22nd
Don't miss this rare visit to Vancouver by the youngest of England's First Family Of Folk. Eliza is a member of Waterson:Carthy, who performed at the Rogue in 2006. She is an amazing singer and fiddler, and will be accompanied by Canadian singer Aidan Curran, who plays guitar and mandolin. The duo have been working on songs from Aidan's parental homeland, Northumbria, so expect some great fiddle tunes and stirring songs from NE England. Eliza will have a new CD out later this year, so there will be plenty of new material as well. More details...
Druha Trava, September 26th, at St. James Hall
This fine bluegrass quintet from the Czech Republic has recorded a CD with Peter Rowan and has several excellent albums available on Alison Brown's Compass Records label. They are brilliant musicians, combining Celtic and Classical music with their unique approach to Bluegrass. www.druhatrava.com, more details...
Hungry Hill, September 28th, at St. James Hall
B.C. Fiddler and Singer Jenny Lester and her superb Bluegrass quintet Hungry Hill launch a wonderful new CD, "Ride", next Friday at St. James Hall. This is a co-presentation with the Pacific Bluegrass & Heritage Society. The new CD has some excellent songs and instrumentals, and the band plays with one microphone in the great traditions of Old Time and Bluegrass music. www.hungryhill.ca, more details...
I'll have music from all these bands on my show, The Edge On Folk, on Saturday morning from 8am to noon on CiTR fm 101.9 and www.citr.ca
