Hi everyone

After a very busy week we're starting to settle down into a steadier stream of concerts now. Don't miss the wonderful Garnet Rogers tomorrow night at St. James Hall. Then there's a Contra Dance on Saturday. I had fun the other day filling in for Andrea & Arthur Berman on CiTR's Pacific Pickin'. At 6am! We conducted an audience survey at the past few shows, and it was rather gratifying to learn that this series of Weekly Updates is the biggest single factor bringing folks to our concerts. Thank you! So, here comes another one ...

1. Garnet Rogers, Friday September 30, 8pm, St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Garnet Rogers is a big guy with a big voice. He's also one of the best guitarists you'll ever hear. He's a true road warrior, criss-crossing the continent in his station wagon full of guitars and vintage amplifiers, alone with his incredible collection of music and comedy CDs (visit his website's FAQ section for a brief list of his favourite albums!)

He has released 10 solo CDs and a couple of live albums, as well as collaborations with songwriters Archie Fisher and Doug McArthur. He's produced countless albums for other musicians. He teamed up with Greg Brown and Karen Savoca to record a wonderful live CD at the Black Sheep Inn a few years back, and of course was the mainstay in his late brother's band for a decade or so until Stan's tragic death in 1983. His passionate voice, stunning guitar work, and outrageous sense of humour make his concerts truly memorable, and he's been a regular - and enormously popular - visitor to The Rogue since way back in 1987.

Please bring non-perishable food items to the concert; Garnet requests a donation box at all his shows, and we think it's a great idea too. We'll have a Food Bank Box at the door at the show tomorrow night, and will deliver it to the Vancouver Food Bank in the next day or two.

2. Website Updated!

Thanks again to Raymond Varj for keeping our website up to date. We have added a couple of concerts to our October calendar (a country blues double bill on Oct 14th with Portland's Lauren Sheehan and Regina native Joel Fafard; and on Oct 21st it's Headwater's final gig before they embark for a huge European Tour. They will have special guest Hilary Grist opening for them.) Full details on our Concert Calendar.

I've added photos to my Rogues Gallery page as well, covering various Summer folk festivals and the last few Rogue concerts. Rod Matheson has added some YouTube videos from recent concerts, too.

3. Concerts at Capilano University

We are delighted to be able continue our long association with Capilano University in their Roots Music Series. It is now called Global Roots, and the theatre has been renamed the North Shore Credit Union Centre for the Performing Arts, but essentially it's still the Rogue involved in the Cap Folk & Roots series, so we'll have a membership table - where you can buy / renew memberships, purchase Parcel O'Rogues ticket bundles, and advance tickets to our concerts at St. James Hall. We'll also have a Raffle at these shows:-

Sat Oct 8 - Portuguese fado singer Antonio Zambujo brings his fine band and blends Brazilian, North African, and jazz influences into his music. Any band with Portuguese guitar is well worth checking out!

Wed Oct 26 - Battlefield Band bring their new line-up and their new CD (entitled Line Up) to Cap for the first time

There are other shows in this series, but they take place elsewhere, and we won't have a raffle and table at them. They include:

4. The Edge On Folk, Saturday Oct 1, 8am to noon, CiTR fm 101.9

I'll have plenty of new music again, including the amazing Winton Marsalis / Eric Clapton collaboration, and the Cecil Sharp Project, plus new releases by June Tabor & Oysterband, Martin Simpson, Rakish Angles, Ry Cooder, Tom Russell, and, of course, upcoming Rogue performers (April Verch, BettySoo, The Jaybirds, Lauren Sheehan, Headwater, David Francey, etc.) Please join me for four hours of the best in Roots Music from BC, across Canada, North America, Europe, Africa, and beyond. The show is also streamed live on www.citr.ca and podcasts are available later on the same website.
