The Return of Carlos Nunez

Maestro of the Galician bagpipes comes to North Van's Centennial Theatre (2300 Lonsdale) this Friday, September 19th at 8pm.

You may have been lucky enough to witness the first Vancouver appearance byCarlos Nunez, which was at The Rogue on Valentine's Day this year. Maybe you just have to see him again, or perhaps you need to bring along some disbelieving friends / family this time. This amazing musician is not just a supreme talent, he is an encyclopedia of traditional music - and beyond. Together with his superb band he has blazed a trail for the rich musical heritage of his land - a Celtic region in the northwest of Spain - accompanying the likes of The Chieftains and Jackson Browne along the way. Carlos plays the gaita ("the pipes as if played by a Hendrix or a Coltrane" - The Guardian), flutes, and whistles. His brother David plays percussion, he will be joined by guitar and fiddle and Scots bagpipes and who knows what else?

Trad. / Celtic Music to Rock The Rogue next week!

Celebrated Canadian fiddle champion and composer Mark Sullivan

Quartete a Tete bring their rich blend of trad. music and song to The Rogue

On Friday September 26th at 8pm Canadian fiddler - and one-time Paperboy - Mark Sullivan launches his ninth CD, The Gathering Room, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue.) This brilliant fiddler and composer will perform with multi-instrumentalistAndy Hillhouse, guitarist Craig McGregor, and bassist Rob Becker. Mark will also make a guest appearance with Carlos Nunez at the Centennial Theatre on the 19th.

The opening set will be performed by the prodigiously talented fiddler Kierah Raymond, winner of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Young Performer of the Year in 2013.

The following evening, Saturday September 27th, Lynn McGown and Michael Pratt - founders of the Jericho Folk Club and proprietors of the Celtic Traditions store on West 10th at Alma - are also launching a CD. Together with Vanessa Kay (fiddle) and Michael Viens (guitar, bodhran) they make Quartete a Tete - and their joyous blend of voices and strings and concertina will have the audience singing along in no time! Guest appearances by Simon Kendall and Craig McGregor will keep things interesting and lively.

Radio Rogue Is Back!!

We've been having some network problems at the new office, but thanks to the sterling work of Stewart Seidel and Phil Gray - and sheer determination from yours truly - it's all working again. Better than ever!

Radio Rogue broadcasts 24/7 from the office and there's a big new playlist with hundreds of songs - mostly by performers coming to The Rogue in the next little while. There are also some new releases, some old favourites, and some recent Rogue visitors.

What's on The Edge On Folk on CiTR this week?

Every Saturday from 8am to noon I host The Edge On Folk on CiTR fm 101.9 It's streamed live on www.citr.ca and podcasts of past editions are available. You can find playlists of the show here but the best way to experience it is tune in and turn me on LIVE! On this week's show I'll have new music by the likes of Loudon Wainwright III, Birds of Chicago, Corey Harris, Jerry Douglas, Lizzy Hoyt, Jesse Winchester, Dan Bern, T. Nile, Reid Jamieson, Kate Rusby, The Secret Sisters, The Once, The Duhks, Ellis Paul, and much more.

The first hour is mostly African music, then we might find ourselves in the deep south or Louisiana for a while, in the company of some of the finest troubadours around, relishing in some exciting new local performers, and wallowing in Celtic and trad in the last hour. Or maybe there's be something different this time. Something for every taste, I hope.
