Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

John Reischman & The Jaybirds
Friday December 5th 8pm
St. James Hall (3214 West 10th)
I can't think of a better-balanced bluegrass band working today. While there are more frenetic and more notes-per-second bluegrass music out there, I can't think of a more polished, subtle, and thoughtful approach to bluegrass - Hermon Joyner, Audiophile Audition

With five critically acclaimed albums and two Juno nominations, the Jaybirds have established themselves as one of the freshest, most tasteful bands on the acoustic music scene today. The group fashions a stylish, elegant take on bluegrass that is at once innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned, yet unselfconsciously new. Their live shows feature their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and newly arranged traditional material mixed with the fun of watching the Jaybirds skillfully weave around one central microphone, and topped off with the band’s genial and often humorous MC work.

Now The Jaybirds return for their annual migratory stopover at The Rogue and they have hatched a wonderful new CD - "On A Winter's Night" - to mark the onset of Winter. This is not a selection of hackneyed Christmas songs and carols, but rather an 8 song EP inspired by the album "American Folk Songs for Christmas" recorded by Mike, Penny & Peggy Seeger and members of their families, and from the book of the same name  by their mother, Ruth Crawford Seeger. Songs include one of my personal faves "A-Roving On A Winer's Night" (made famous by the late Doc Watson) and "The Cherry Tree Carol" to soaring instrumentals "Breaking Up Christmas" and "Christmas Eve". There's also a truly gorgeous new song (to me) "Oh Watch The Stars".

All this seasonal cheer will be further enhanced by the ability to purchase some of Trisha's Gagnon's award-winning home-made jam!

There are still tickets left! They can be purchased at Highlife Records, Prussin Music, Red Cat Records, Rufus' Guitar Shop and here They will also be available at the door at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue) up to show time at 8pm.

Radio Waves
The Edge On Folk (CiTR fm 101.9 and www.citr.ca)
On this week's show I'll pay tribute to two more musical greats we've lost this week: Bobby Keys (Rolling Stones sax player for 4 decades) and Ian McLagan (keyboard player with The Small Faces, The Faces, and much more.) I'll have some more new music brought back by Tony Montague from the recent WOMEX Conference in Santiago de Compostela (music from Brazil, Norway, Latvia, Portugal and Denmark) plus the new CD by the lovely African singer Dobet Gnahore.

Plus an exciting sneak preview of The Rogue's 2015 Concert Calendar - and a look back at some of the highlights of the past few months.

Please join me from 8am to noon on Saturday on CiTR fm 101.9 and Telus TV Channel 7023. We're also streamed live on www.citr.ca

The new Calendar makes a unique gift for the music lover(s) in your family / group of friends! It is available at our shows and also at our office on Granville Island (1504 Duranleau Street. Next door to Theatre Sports. Upstairs at the back.) Call 604-732-1305 to make sure there's someone there first - or to book a time to come in and buy one.
