1. Cannery Row, Friday November 20th, 8pm, St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)
If you like Cajun-infused Blues & Roots music, with superb guitar, fiddle, accordion, drums and washboard - and fine songs to boot - then look no further than to Cannery Row next Friday. Gary Comeau (fiddle, accordion, keyboards), along with Tim Hearsey (guitar - mostly slide; my favourite!) and Chris "the wrist" Nordqvist make every occasion a lot like Mardi Gras - whatever the time of year! They released their first album as a trio two years ago. Chris has been on the scene for many years now, having played alongside - and behind! - some of the very best Canadian songwriters, including Roy Forbes and Ferron. Tim Hearsey accompanied Jim Byrnes for a few years; he's one of the best slide players around. Gary has released several solo albums and his originals like "Rosie", "Going To The Country", and "This Road I Walk" could have come from the heart and soul of The Big Easy, but this Halifax-bred, Vancouver musician has absorbed many influences and this trio is the perfect vehicle for his music. We've just added bunch of shows to our Concert Calendar online. We are really excited about the new schedule!
Friday November 27th - Linda McRae launches her new CD, Shadow Trails, which was produced by Steve Dawson. Tom Russell's guitarist Thad Beckman will open for her, and is also hosting a Guitar "Seminar" on the 26th.
Thursday December 3rd - The Acoustic Guitar Project, a unique collaboration between 5 Vancouver musicians takes place at The Rogue. Also this week there are 30 similar events happening around the world. Each city has a special guitar donated and 5 songwriters from that town are charged with writing a new song on the guitar, and presenting it with a couple of other songs they've written, in the round. Each songwriter has the guitar for a week, before handing it over to the next. The 5 Vancouver songwriters are Shari Ulrich, Wes Mackey, Lydia Hol, Itamar Erez, and Buckman Coe.
Tuesday December 8th - Sarah Jane Scouten brings her new band for another exciting project, which will include songs from the Phil Thomas collection and more. I think she's going to record some of them live at the gig, too!
Friday December 11th - Dana Sipos (an itinerant songwriter, originally from Yellowknife), Familiar Wild (Vancouver's Melissa Bandura), and the inimitable T. Nile get together to present some new songs and some unique collaborations.
Friday December 18th - Van Django Bells / Cool Yule is the annual seasonal celebration of Vancouver gypsy jazz quartet Van Django, with special guests L.J. Monteney (vocals) and Keith Bennett (harmonica.) It was such a great show last year that they are doing it again, and they have a brand new CD to go with it!
Friday January 15th - Three of Denmark's finest musicians collaborate to take us on a journey through the rich musical traditions of their homeland. Morten Alfred Hoirup (guitar), Kristian Bugge (fiddle) and Sonich Lydom (accordion, harmonica) have all played in B.C. at The Rogue and / or at Mission and Folk Alliance 2001 before: Morten with Harald Haugaard, Kristian with Habadekuk, and Sonich with the excellent trio ULC. They released a superb CD together last year. We are extremely delighted to start 2016 with this show!
Sunday January 17th - J.P. Cormier returns to The Rogue for the first time in almost two decades. We saw him at Celtic Colours last month. What an incredible guitarist he is! In fact he can play anything with strings exceptionally well, and he's a brilliant songwriter too.
Friday January 22nd - The Revelers tore up St. James in May with their stunning blend of zydeco, Cajun and swamp pop. This Louisiana sextet features a front line of accordion, fiddle, sax, and guitar. Unabashed rocking good-time fun!!
Saturday January 23rd - Vancouver songwriter Lydia Hol has been working as my Admin Assistant for the last few months. She's been doubly busy, putting on a great set at Mission in July with her full band, and opening for Dar Williams at The Rogue last month. She's been busy writing songs and recording her first full-length CD, Heading North, and this show is the album launch.
Wednesday January 27th - Quebec's Le Vent Du Nord just won another award for their latest CD, Tetu. This quartet is one of the most exciting and innovative roots bands on the planet! Quebecois fiddle, accordion, vielle a roue, guitar, piano, vocals and bass never sounded so good!
Friday January 29th - John Reischman and The Jaybirds bring their distinctively stylish bluegrass chops and delicious harmony singing for their annual gig at The Rogue. Speaking of delicious, Trisha Gagnon's prize-winning jam will also be on sale at the show!
Sunday January 31st - Aurelio Martinez is a Garifuna singer from Honduras. We are co-presenting this show with Capilano University's Global Roots series - at St. James Hall. Aurelio and his wonderful band starred at the Edmonton Folk Festival in August, with their irresistible rhythms and melodic songs and acoustic guitars.
In February we have Old Man Luedecke (5th), Australia's Jeff Lang (11th) and Cape Breton's Coig (13th), then I'm off to Folk Alliance in Kansas City. We finish the month with two very exciting shows: Washington DC's The Bumper Jacksons, with their New Orleans jazz / old time / contemporary acoustic mayhem (25th), and Victoria's Oliver Swain brings back his Big Machine with a new album and his amazing three-octave voice (27th). We're working on our March and April and May programming, with highlights including Sharon Shannon (March 13th) and De Dannan ( March 22nd), David Francey (April 7th), Corin Raymond & Jonathan Byrd (April 15th), April In Paris gypsy jazz festival (April 22-24), Caleb Klauder's Country Honky Tonk Band (May 6th) and Bluegrass luminaries Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper (May 11th), oh, and Dave Gunning on June 3rd! And more!!

I've just ordered some copies of my 2016 calendar, with heaps of photos I took at Rogue events in 2015. The calendar includes dates of Rogue shows in 2016, festival dates, and much more! It's full-colour, on glossy heavy stock, spiral bound, and is 13" x 10". The cost is $25, with all proceeds going to support live music at The Rogue. You can order your copy online or in person at any Rogue gig (I'll have a sample copy on hand tomorrow night, for instance!) Or call 604-732-1305 for more information.
