1. Coig and St. James Hall Celebration!!
The BIG news is that St. James Community Square has been saved!! We cannot yet give you the details about who or how, but all will be revealed on Saturday February 13th. There will be a major announcement at the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra rehearsal in St. James Hall that afternoon, and in the evening we will have a big celebration at the Coig concert in the hall. Coig is one of the finest Celtic bands anywhere. They are coming all the way from Cape Breton for a western tour, and this will be their second appearance at The Rogue (they put on a fabulous show in August 2014. It will be a little cooler in the hall this time!) We will also have cake and bubbles and it will be a momentous occasion - with amazing music too! This will also be the launch of the Fundraising Campaign to make improvements to the venue - ventilation is a must, for example! 2. John Reischman and The Jaybirds, Saturday January 30th 8pm, St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

John Reischman provides the direction, The Jaybirds provide the diversity. Soft-spoken and gentle, Reischman talks about honouring bluegrass tradition while adding something new. His Jaybirds — Jim Nunally, Greg Spatz, Nick Hornbuckle and Trisha Gagnon — not only are within the bluegrass tradition but add old-time country and folk as well as the character of their respective instruments, which, in the case of Gagnon, is a woman’s voice.

Reischman generously lets each have a turn to shine and then stands out on mandolin. Bluegrass is rigid in its formality, but the versatility of Reischman and The Jaybirds assures variety within it. “It definitely can be,” Reischman agrees. “The bluegrass I like is from the ’40s and ’50s. We try to honour the original style. When it comes to bluegrass I try to be true to the form. I have solo albums, but so does everybody else in the band. When it’s a solo record I do what I want to do. With the Jaybirds I’m featured, but I’m part of the band.”

With The Jaybirds, now together about 15 years, Reischman is dedicated to bluegrass. Solo, he exhibits his interest in latin, jazz and the all-encompassing but woefully inaccurate world music. His all-instrumental albums without The Jaybirds also give him the chance to collaborate with “guys I’ve wanted to work with for a long time.” These include Bruce Molsky, Tony Trischka, Chris Thile and Kenny Smith, who are all on his third album, Walk Along John.

With five, and soon to be six, Jaybirds albums and three with guitarist John Miller, Reischman demonstrates both his love of roots music and his broader interests. “Early on, I chose most everything,” he recounts the formation of The Jaybirds, five people who didn’t know each other but had a common love of bluegrass. “I put the band together. Rhythmically, we could all mesh, that’s the key component. We’re all mature, level-headed individuals and we grew into friends. It’s a band.”

A band that plays bluegrass with enough range and depth that Reischman doesn’t feel any need to go afield and draw from his solo work. “I keep it separate,” he says. “In this group it’s not part of what we do.”

4. Old Man Luedecke, Friday February 5th 8pm, St. James Hall (3214 west 10th Avenue) 

One of our favourite Canadian songwriters returns to The Rogue next weekend! Chris "Old Man" Luedecke brings a new collection of songs from his latest recording "Domestic Eccentric", with his characteristic laid-back, self-effacing, humorous delivery to the fore.
