Wednesday February 7, 2024

Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

1. Collage Trad, Saturday February 10th, 8pm,

Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

This scintillating sextet stars three superb fiddlers: Serena Eades (Forro do Cana / Delhi 2 Dublin / NSCE), Gabriel Dubreuil (Early Spirit / NCSE) & Canadian Old-Time Fiddle Champion Mark Sullivan, backed by a stellar rhythm section of Andy Hillhouse (Mad Pudding / The McDades / Get Back Unplugged etc. on guitar), Wynston Minckler (The Burying Ground on bass), and Allen Dionne (Mad Pudding / LJ Mounteney Band / Get Back Unplugged on drums). They combine Celtic music with influences from jazz, classical music, pop, and many global traditions. This photo was taken by Squamish photographer Jim Hegan at last year's Celticfest Vancouver. What a great performance they put on! I was blown away! That is why we are so excited to bring them indoors to The Rogue this weekend!

Tickets to this concert are available here

Alternatively, if you can't make it to the show in person, please consider our unique and professionally produced Watch-At-Home option and click here to see the show for a mere $15. (In fact, you can watch any time, so if you enjoy the live concert you might want to watch it all again and again. We can offer this option, too!)

2. Medusa plus Pierre Schryer & Adam Dobres,

Sunday February 11th, 8pm, Mel Lehan Hall

at St. James  (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Medusa is Georgia HathawayLea KirsteinMarta Sołek, and Saskia Tomkins. They blend fiddle and cello with Swedish nyckelharpa, Polish knee-fiddle and other exotic string instruments, so that the band's dynamic arrangement style cross-pollinates the sounds of Middle Eastern, Scandinavian, Celtic, Appalachian, and Eastern European music, as well as original tunes, to create something previously unheard. They released their enthralling debut CD in November.

“Schryer and Dobres are bringing their stunning range of traditional music to all generations of fiddle fans.”

- Alex Monaghan, The Living Tradition magazine, Scotland

PIERRE SCHRYER is one of Canada’s leading traditional fiddlers. He is a recipient of numerous titles and awards including Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, Grand Masters Champion, Violoneux Championnat, and North American Irish Fiddle Champion. His ability knows no bounds, covering styles from Irish, Scottish, Québecois, and Cape Breton to Canadian Old Time, American Swing and more. ADAM DOBRES is a highly accomplished guitarist with a natural ability to embody any style of music. He is equally at home with bluegrass, Celtic, jazz, Gypsy, country, folk, old time, rock, blues, and more.

3. Harry Manx, Friday February 16th, 8pm,

Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Combining the coolest acoustic blues with the sultry sounds of Indian slide guitar, Saltspring Island's Harry Manx delivers a spicy mix that is totally compelling and addictive! This concert will sell out. Soon. So please don't make w!ih those Hesitation Blues, folks!

Harry will be joined for this special show by violinist Mark Ferris. The current Concertmaster of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Mark spent 17 years with the acclaimed CBC Radio Orchestra. He is a founding member and composer for the Yaletown String Quartet. Harry often works with such a string quartet and we are delighted that he will be playing this night.

4. Le Vent Du Nord, Sunday February 18th, 8pm,

Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

This show is SOLD OUT. We are co-presenting this great band with Capilano University's Global Roots Series, and they handle the tickets sales. They requested that we would not offer the Watch-At-Home option. Sorry.

5. Tribute To Shane MacGowan with Pat Chessell

& Sinead X Sanders, Saturday March 2nd, 8pm,

Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

This concert was originally scheduled for January 19th, but we were forced to postpone it due to the heavy snow fall that week, which made the side roads around the venue impassable and parking impossible.

We are delighted to be able to stage this special tribute to one of Ireland's most impressive poets and songwriters, starring two stalwart members of Vancouver's vibrant folk and roots music scene. Shane MacGowan and The Pogues were hugely influential in my early years of presenting a radio show on CiTR, and his songs inspired both Sinead X Sanders and Pat Chessell to take up the guitar and the pen and hit the stage. They will each lead a small band, and perhaps they will sing a duet or two. We can't wait to hear their tribute to the great man.

Raised on jukebox-era rock & roll, blues, R&B, country, jazz, & punk rock, Sinéad X Sanders cut her teeth playing the bars & pubs of Vancouver, BC. Her voice has been compared with everything from Wanda Jackson to Billie Holiday, Janis Joplin to Elvis Presley — but she doesn’t quite sound like any one of them, or possibly, anyone else you’ve ever heard.

In a country that loves its Celtic music, it’s no surprise that Vancouver’s Pat Chessell has become known as one of the most exciting roots artists in Western Canada. Pat’s rootsy vocal style, charismatic stage presence and expert musicianship (guitar) are building an ever-growing audience of enthusiastic fans.

Tickets for the January 19th show will be honoured here. There are still more tickets to see this concert - live in the hall - available here

Watch-At-Home tickets are available here.

6. Aleksi Campagne Trio, Sunday March 3rd, 8pm,

Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Aleksi Campagne is uniquely qualified to offer a contemporary, indie-folk take on the time-honoured fiddle-singing tradition. Aleksi grew up on stage. At five years old, he began performing alongside his mother, Canadian folk icon, Connie Kaldor. At nineteen, Aleksi moved to Paris to study under Jazz-violin legend Didier Lockwood. At twenty-one, Aleksi became the only student to have ever been accepted into the classical violin, jazz violin and jazz voice performance programs at McGill University

He will bring his acoustic trio to town to launch his double CD, For The Giving / Sans Rien Donner. He has performed at The Rogue with Connie (and his brother Gabriel and father, Paul Campagne, a couple of times in recent years.) Don't miss this amazing singer, songwriter and fiddle player in his first full-length Rogue show!

7. Radio Waves

Firstly, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who made a donation to The Saturday Edge On Folk during last week's CiTR Fundrive(Don't worry if you forgot last weekend. There is still time. Fundrive runs until midnight on February 8th.) Your support is much appreciated!

On this week's show I'm playing a lot of Canadian music, including a stunning new CD from Montreal's Celtic / Nordic quartet Nordri, and recent Grammy-winners Allison Russell and Joni Mitchell. Plus there a few Canadians playing at The Rogue in the next few weeks, so we'll hear some of those too. And a whole bunch more besides. I hope you will tune me in and turn me on this and every Saturday, 8am to 12 noon, on www.citr.ca (Did someone say Penguin Cafe Orchestra?)
