1. What a fabulous couple of concerts we just experienced at The Driven Bow Fiddle Weekend!
|

|
Medusa, Pierre Schryer & Adam Dobres, and Collage Tradtreated us to some incredible musicianship and demonstrated some of the rich variety of fiddle music that has found a verdant home in this great country of ours! Thanks to the brilliant musicians who wove their magic around us, and to all of you who ventured out to hear them - or stayed home to watch the shows on your screens. And of course to Hubcast Media for making remote viewing possible.

2. Harry Manx, Friday February 16th, 8pm, Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

This concert is Sold Out, but you can still see the show by purchasing a Watch At Home ticket!
“Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. He has created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to. Harry will be joined for this special show by violinist Mark Ferris.

3. Le Vent Du Nord, Sunday February 18th, 8pm, Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

This concert is presented by Capilano University's Global Roots Series, and it is also Sold Out. However, we have now arranged for you to Watch-At-Home if you missed out on this chance to see Quebec's finest Trad band out here on the west coast - and in a fine dance hall at that.
We really hope you've already purchased a concert ticket, but if not, please join the action from home. This is a show you wouldn't want to miss!

4. Tribute To Shane MacGowan with Pat Chessell Band and Sinead X Sanders, Saturday March 2nd, 8pm, Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

|
The Rogue pays tribute to Shane MacGowan, the brilliant Irish songwriter who led The Pogues in their pioneering fusion of Irish trad with punk back in the early 1980s. The Pogues were one of the major reasons why I started hosting a radio show back in 1985, and Shane's songwriting was also a major influence on two Vancouver songwriters as they explored their muse back in those early days of "rogue" folk! Sinead X Sanders and Pat Chessellwill each lead an acoustic band to cover some of Shane's wonderfully poetic - and earthy - songs.
This concert was originally scheduled for last month, but was postponed as Vancouver streets fell under the spell of winter. Tickets purchased for the original show will be honoured for this event, and there are still tickets available here for the live concert in the hall or here for the Watch-At-Home option. This unique concert promises to be totally enthralling and entertaining!

5. Aleksi Campagne Trio, Sunday March 3rd, 8pm, Mel Lehan Hall at St. James (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Aleksi Campagne is uniquely qualified to offer a contemporary, indie-folk take on the time-honoured fiddle-singing tradition. Aleksi grew up on stage. At five years old, he began performing alongside his mother, Canadian folk icon, Connie Kaldor. At nineteen, Aleksi moved to Paris to study under Jazz-violin legend Didier Lockwood. At twenty-one, he became the only student to have ever been accepted - simultaneously - into the classical violin, jazz violin and jazz voice performance programs at McGill University.
He will bring his acoustic trio to town to launch his double CD, For The Giving / Sans Rien Donner. He has performed at The Rogue with Connie (and his brother Gabriel and father, Paul Campagne, a couple of times in recent years.) Don't miss this amazing singer, songwriter and fiddle player in his first full-length Rogue show!

On this week's edition of The Saturday Edge On Folk I'll be celebrating Black History Month with some of my favourite artists of African heritage - and others influenced by the rich rhythms and inspiration originating in those diverse regions. I'll also have some new music from Bela Fleck, Altan, Nordri, Tinsley Ellis, The Henry Girls, John Leventhal, Rant, Martyn Joseph, Louise Bichan, Frander, and much more. Plus concert previews of Rogue shows and others featuring the likes of Allison Russell, William Prince, and Justin Adams & Mauro Volante.
