Thursday November 1, 2018

Keep in Touch

There are two ways you can receive these updates automatically:

1. The Once, Friday November 2nd, 8pm, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

This concert with the wonderful Newfoundland singing trio
The Once is Sold Out. If you purchased tickets online take the Will Call line to the left hand side of our concert entrance. If you bought tickets at an outlet or at the Rogue, or if you reserved a ticket, please take the right hand side of the entrance.

There is no Waiting List for tickets. Sorry.

N.B. the washroom adjacent to the hall upstairs is closed for renovations. It will reopen in January as a much larger, accessible washroom with three stalls! Please use the downstairs washrooms for now. (These, too, will be upgraded in 2019.)

2. Contra Dance, Saturday November 3rd, 7:30pm, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Our first Saturday dance with the Sybaritic Stringband returns to St. James Hall this weekend. Big thanks to the Sybs for moving to the Russian Hall last month to allow us to present a concert with Guy Davis & Fabrizio Poggi that night.

One big change you will notice is that the windows along the east side of the hall are now openable. This will make the hall much cooler, and this is a good thing at the dances!

3. TriVo & Fraser Union, Sunday November 4th, 7pm, at St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

TriVo
comprises Karla Mundy, Dawn Pemberton and Brian Tate - three acclaimed local choir leaders and marvellous singers. Fraser Union is a venerable local band with a huge social conscience and a plethora of activist anthems.

This concert starts earlier than our usual start time: 7pm instead of 8pm. It is a fundraiser for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, supporting African grandmothers (gogos) who are taking care of their grandchildren since the kids's parents have died of Aids. There are two great bands, plus the remarkable and unique Loonie Draw - with a variety of goods up for grabs for $1 draw. For tickets and information click here

4. Next Weekend (Long Weekend) at The Rogue

We kick off Remembrance Day weekend on Friday November 9th with a CD launch concert for Early Spirit, whose debut CD - Unrelated - has just come out. Led by brilliant young fiddler Gabriel Dubreuil and former Spirit of the West singer Jay Knutson, Early Spirit also features bassist Will Chernoff and drummer Ben Kelly (The Paperboys - and son of SOTW's Geoffrey Kelly.) They reprise some of SOTW's early songs, and add some tasty instrumentals and new songs from Jay's mighty pen. It will be a great party!! Come along and buy the CD. Support your local musicians! For tickets and information click here

On Saturday 10th we present a concert with English-born Alberta-based songwriter Martin Kerr. We were mightily impressed by Martin's performances at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in July, and are delighted to be able to bring him to The Rogue for the first time. He is such a powerful communicator and a fine singer with an engaging wit and an original repertoire full of topical songs and social commentary. He also does a mean version of Bruce Cockburn's Lovers In A Dangerous Time. Martin got his big break when an Edmonton businessman who'd been impressed with his busking suddenly offered him a gig opening for Sarah McLachlan at the Rexall Centre! Martin's album rocketed to the top of the local charts, and he's been on the crest of a wave ever since. For tickets and information click here

"Martin Kerr..what a voice! Pristine, measured and beautiful." - Sarah McLachlan
"You had me in tears" - Bruce Cockburn

5. Coming Soon

On Friday November 16th Winnipeg duo The Small Glories and Minneapolis trio Norah Rendell & The Lost Forty perform at The Rogue. Details here

Then on Thursday November 22nd we celebrate 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles' White Album when over 30 of Vancouver's finest musicians present unique interpretations of all 29 songs on the double LP.
