Oh Susanna
Thursday, November 13th, 8pm
St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Canadian songwriter Oh Susanna was raised in Vancouver and now lives in Toronto. She last played at The Rogue in October 2011, when she shared the bill with The Abrams Brothers and launched her Soon The Birds CD. Her new CD is called Namedropper, and producer Jim Bryson - who will accompany Suzie on this night - thought that rather than make an album of covers of songs by some of her favourite songwriters, it would be be more interesting to have them write special songs for her; songs that they themselves have never recorded. So the likes of Ron Sexsmith, Jim Cuddy, Old Man Luedecke, Melissa McClelland, Keri Latimer (Nathan), The Good Lovelies, Amelia Curran, and Royal Wood - and others - contributed songs to the project. Sadly, the recording was delayed while she recovered from breast cancer (now thankfully in remission) and the album came out last month. It's a wonderful album, too, but don't imagine for a moment that she has lost any of her own creative spark. Far from it! She remains one of Canada's most compelling songwriters and possesses a glorious voice with which to deliver her songs - and those written for her, too!

A Rockin' Country Honky Tonk Dance!
Caleb Klauder Country Band
Viper Central

Friday, November 14th, 8pm
St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

This will be a memorable evening of down-home blue collar country music and stompin' bluegrass with two superb bands!

Portland's Caleb Klauder is renowned for his retro-country vocal style and catchy songs. He is also a member of the Foghorn Stringband, of course, and will be back at the Rogue with them at the end of January. This time he leads his ace honky tonk band which features Jesse Emerson on upright bass, Ned Folkerth on drums, Reeb Willms on vocals and guitar, Russ Blake on pedal steel and electric guitar, and Sam Weiss on fiddle. Caleb plays mandolin and guitar, and he handles most of the lead vocals. The band performs Calebʼs praised original songs alongside classics from George Jones, The Louvin Brothers and Dolly Parton, all at once sounding timeless, fresh, and alive. There is a drive to this music that makes it unique and captivating. This is country music made for people who want to have fun and who want to dance, harking back to the old dance hall days when people of all walks of life came together to simply dance, socialize, and enjoy live music. More info can be found on their Website

Vancouver's Viper Central is an acoustic stringband that takes that "high lonesome sound" to new places. Led by fiddler / singer Kathleen Nisbet and guitarist Steve Charles, the Vipers also feature Tim Tweedale on dobro and pedal steel, Patrick Metzger on bass and Mark Vaughan on mandolin. Their latest album, Thump & Howl, pays homage to The Chicken Coop, a South Vancouver venue that played host to all the country honky tonk stars of the 50s and 60s. All band members contribute original songs, but won't hesitate to deliver up their take on an ages-old mournful waltz or bring the house down with a barn-burning bluegrass standard. Visit their Website for more about this exceptional band!

Tickets are available here and at Highlife, Prussin, Red Cat, and Rufus' Guitars - as well as at the door.

The Gloaming
Saturday November 15th, 8pm
The Chan Centre at UBC

This is not a Rogue show, but we strongly recommend it for all fans of Celtic music. The Gloaming features Co. Clare fiddler Martin Hayes, Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill, Co. Cork singer Iarla O'Lionaird (Afro Celt Sound System), Dublin hardanger fiddler Caoimhin O'Rhaillaigh, and Vermont pianist Thomas Bartlett - aka Doveman. This is beautiful, evocative, and rich music, built upon timeless melodies and gaelic songs and delivered with a brooding, soulful intensity that occasionally boils over into a frenzy of flying fiddles, flowing curls and tapping feet.

Martin Simpson
Sunday November 16th, 7pm
St. James Hall (3214 West 10th Avenue)

Here are some excerpts from a recent article in the New StatesmanEnglish guitarist Martin Simpson has earned his stripes.  Born and raised in Scunthorpe, he got his first guitar when he was 12 and had turned professional by the age of 17. His repertoire spans traditional ballads (such as “Sir Patrick Spens”), political broadsides and original compositions (including “Never Any Good”, a moving portrait of his wayward father), all accompanied by his fluid guitar finger-picking. He is now a lynchpin of what is being called the biggest folk revival since the 1960s: with the Folk Awards not only taking over the Royal Albert Hall but selling out, too, and with the Coen brothers’ folk scene homage Inside Llewyn Davis a critical hit, the genre is, Simpson says, “doing better than it ever has. It’s not just about music charting – there’s a lot of attention being paid. People are taking it very seriously and there’s a lot more reference to it in the media, without it getting silly.

"For years, the interest in this music has been growing. The access to the material gets ever easier and it’s a bit like Olympic sports – records get broken; you think it can’t get better but the more it gets done, the faster, the better people get.”

Martin's recorded output and compelling performances have made him a favourite at The Rogue over the years. This will be his 11th Rogue gig, dating back to 1992. There have been so many highlights, including his stunning rendition of Dylan's Masters of War a few years back. His mastery of the Blues, of ancient ballads, of Dylan covers, and his incredible guitar work would earn him many a Gold Medal if folk music were indeed an Olympic event! His latest CD, Vagrant Stanzas, even includes The Bell, a very powerful song about the Berlin Olympics of 1936 (on the bonus disc, which is exceptional!)  Visit Martin's Website

The evening will start earlier than usual, with a special performance by Ontario trio The Marigolds (Suzie Vinnick, Caitlin Hanford and Gwen Swick.) Caitlin and Gwen were here recently with Quartette, while Suzie was last seen at The Rogue in 2013. All are marvellous singers and songwriters, and their repertoire is part bluesy, part jazzy, and part traditional country and bluegrass, specializing in angelic harmonies and gutsy playing. Check out their Website

Tickets are available here, and at Highlife Records, Prussin Music, Red Cat Records, and Rufus' Guitar Shop - as well as at the door.
